Battle Mountain High School quarterback Anthony Silva was named the Northern 2A Offensive Player of the year for the 2022 football season, which is selected by the league’s coaches.
Pershing County High School hosted Virginia City on Wednesday (Dec. 21), the first night of winter break. The Pershing County girls overwhelmed the Muckers 49-12 and the boys overcame an eight-point deficit to win 64-57. The mood in the gym was festive. Even the principal wore a Grinch sweater.

The Lowry High School boys basketball team used an impressive run out of halftime, to breakaway from Truckee and beat the Wolverines 49-35 on Monday, Dec. 19, in Winnemucca.
In an unusual mid-afternoon match-up, the Lowry High School girls basketball team hosted Truckee on Monday, Dec. 19. The contest was made up after being postponed earlier in the year.
The Mustangs had two close games this week, one loss and one win. On Thursday Pershing hosted Pyramid Lake. The game ended at 57-54, with the Mustangs trailing by three points. Saturday the Mustangs traveled to Smith Valley. This time they won by three points, 58-55. Pershing County now stands at 4-6 overall.
Their momentum keeps building. Last Saturday the PCHS girls basketball team traveled to Smith Valley for a non-conference game. They beat their hosts with a final score of 47-22. “We were able to create turnovers and turn them into points. The girls are getting more comfortable on the court together and it’s starting to show,” said coach Lee Houston.
The Lowry High School boys basketball team extended its winning streak to four games this past week on the road but it was not easy in both cases. The Buckaroos’ offense struggled for much of the night against Hug on Wednesday, Dec. 14, but Lowry rallied for a 53-49 win. Just a couple days later, Lowry had to withstand a North Valleys rally in Reno to beat the Panthers 45-42.
The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team was back in Idaho this past weekend for the Wiley Dobbs Invitational in Twin Falls. The tournament was broken into a varsity, JV and girls tournament.
The McDermitt High School boys basketball team picked up its first win of the season this past weekend at the Super 8 Classic in Susanville, Calif. Prior to the tournament, the Bulldogs traveled to Jordan Valley, Ore., on Thursday and lost 38-16.
After opening the season with seven straight victories, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team lost its first game of the season this past Thursday night in Oregon.
The Lowry High School girls basketball team remained undefeated on the season with two impressive road wins over Northern 3A West foes. Lowry traveled to Hug High School on Wednesday, Dec. 14, and did not allow the Hawks to make a field goal in the 58-2 win.
