Lowry extends win streak to five games

The Lowry High School boys basketball team used an impressive run out of halftime, to breakaway from Truckee and beat the Wolverines 49-35 on Monday, Dec. 19, in Winnemucca. 

The game was a make-up date after the original game was postponed. The Buckaroos have won five games in a row and are 5-3 overall and 4-0 in the Northern 3A.

Lowry jumped out to a 4-0 lead behind baskets from Jordan Bills and Lance Brinegar, but just made one more field goal the rest of the first quarter and trailed Truckee 7-6.

The Buckaroos took the lead for good at the start of the second quarter off of buckets by Anthony Guzman and Brinegar and later opened a 18-9 advantage after a 7-0 run. 

Isaac Danner started the spurt with an old-fashioned 3-point play and the Lowry press defense created two easy baskets by Brinegar and Bills.

The Buckaroos saw that nine-point lead fade away, as the Wolverines made a late run to trail 20-18 at halftime. The difference in the contest was a 13-1 run in the third quarter by Lowry. 

The Buckaroos scored the first eight points of the quarter and then extended the lead to 33-19 after 3 -point shot by Brinegar and another bucket by the senior who finished with a game-high 17 points.

The advantage never dropped below double digits in the fourth quarter and Lowry led by as many as 19 points at 47-28 after a basket by Guzman.

Dempsey Jenkins joined Brinegar in double figures with 11 points, Danner added eight, Guzman six, Bills four and Kayson Garner two.

Lowry is in Reno for a three-day tournament and played McQueen on Tuesday and Fernley on Wednesday.

Lowry begins Northern 3A East play on Thursday, Jan. 5, against Churchill County at 7:30 p.m. in Winnemucca.
