Pershing County High School overflowed with wrestlers, parents and coaches last Saturday. The Lovelock Invitational tournament spilled over to both gyms and lasted all day.
It was a pretty good day for the Lowry High School wrestling program this past Saturday at the Lovelock Mustangs Invitational at Pershing County High School. The Buckaroos won the tournament with 248.5 points and the Lowry Gold was fourth at 120. Los Gatos (183.5) and Churchill County (157) were second and third, respectively. Lowry had five individual champions in Kruz Gomez at 106 pounds, Coda Nichols (113), Benton Baker (126), Jhett Harber (165) and Luke Fentress (175).
The McDermitt High School girls basketball team continued its winnings ways this past weekend at the Comstock Classic in Virginia City. The Lady Bulldogs rolled past the host Muckers on Friday afternoon, winning 58-11.
The McDermitt High School boys basketball team was back on the road this past weekend for the Comstock Classic in Virginia City. The Bulldogs were able to play three of its four games, with the last being canceled due to winter conditions in the area. McDermitt opened with host Virginia City and lost 77-16 to the Muckers. In the second game on Saturday, McDermitt lost 66-45. In the only contest on Saturday, McDermitt lost 44-22 to Pahranagat Valley.
The Pershing County High School boys basketball team has one year of experience across the board but they’re showing steady improvement. They finish up their preseason ranked 3-5. Two of their three wins happened this past week at the Whittell tournament. Pershing County lost to Owyhee 59-24 on Thursday but bounced back the next day.
The Scotch Doubles tournament was held Saturday, Dec. 3, at Spare Time Bowl. Twenty-eight youth and adult bowlers participates. The bowlers bowled a total of three games, with the you throwing the first ball and the adult picking up the rest of the pins.
A snowstorm interfered with some games at the Whittell tournament last weekend. However, the varsity girls finished their preseason in excellent spirits.
When it comes to high school wrestling, experience is crucial especially for a young team. Four Lovelock wrestlers competed at the McQueen JV tournament in Reno last Saturday.
Battle Mountain High School’s Sean Scherer claimed the 113-pound title at the Cody Louk Invitational this past weekend at the Winnemucca Event Center.

The Lowry High School boys basketball team picked up its first wins of the season this past week in Winnemucca. Lowry hosted Pyramid Lake in a non-conference game on Tuesday, Dec. 6 and beat the Lakers 50-35. The Buckaroos hosted Sparks in a crossover game on Saturday afternoon and beat the Railroaders 52-41 to improve to 2-3 on the season.
It was the opposite ends of the spectrum for the Lowry High School girls basketball team last week. The reigning 3A state championships needed to wait to the final seconds to knock off Pyramid Lake 58-55, while closing out the week with an 85-3 win over Sparks to improve its record to 6-0 and winning streak to 25 games, dating back to last year. The Lady Bucks were scheduled to host Truckee last Friday, but that game was postponed due to travel concerns for Truckee and the team getting back over the Sierra Nevada Mountains to get home.
In its final games of the calendar year, the Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team collected two wins in three games last weekend at the Comstock Classic in Virginia City.
The Lowry High School wrestling team had two grapplers finish second in their respective weight classes this past weekend at the Cody Louk Invitational held at Winnemucca Event Center. The Buckaroos placed second in the team standings with 222.5 points, with Spanish Springs winning with 342.5 points. Fernley (202.5), Carson (195) and Douglas (170.5) rounded out the top five.
Moments after Fred McGriff was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, almost two decades after his final game, he got the question. Asked if Barry Bonds belonged in Cooperstown, a smiling McGriff responded: “Honestly, right now, I’m going to just enjoy this evening.” A Hall of Fame committee delivered its answer Sunday, passing over Bonds, Roger Clemens and Curt Schilling while handing McGriff the biggest honor of his impressive big league career.
