McDermitt boys fall in home opener

After starting its season with straight games on the road, the McDermitt High School boys basketball team made its home debut against Pyramid Lake on Tuesday, Dec. 20. In its final contest of the 2022 calendar year.

The Bulldogs, with just five players, battled the Lakers for much of the night but lost 65-31 to drop to 1-10 on the season.

Junior Jeremiah Horn netted six of McDermitt’s nine points in the first eight minutes of play and Eli Northrup added a 3-pointer as well, however, Pyramid Lake came out with a hot shooting touch to build a 23-9 lead in the first quarter. 

The Lakers knocked down five 3-point field goals.

Pyramid Lake bult at 20-point advantage at 33-13 in the second quarter, when Northrup made his second bucket from long distance, but the Lakers still led 38-17 at halftime.

Horn opened the third quarter scoring with a bucket near the basket, only to see Pyramid Lake score the next 14 points, before Northup ended the run near the end of the quarter.

Horn and Northrup each had 13 points for the Bulldogs, Kess Hinkey added four points and Josh Northrup had one.

McDermitt is off until Friday, Jan. 6, when it travels to Jackpot to begin Northern 1A East play at 6:30 p.m. Mountain time. The road trip continues on Saturday, Jan. 7, in Wells at 2:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs return home on Friday, Jan. 13, to play Owyhee at 7 p.m. Carlin visits McDermitt on Saturday, Jan. 14, for a 4 p.m. tip.
