The McDermitt High School girls basketball team faced its stiffest test to this point in the season, as it hosted Pyramid Lake on Tuesday, Dec. 20, in McDermitt.

The Lakers are the 2022 state runner-up in the 1A and have wins over Spanish Springs, Reno and Pershing County this season.

Their only two losses were to Fernley and Lowry, two of the best teams in Northern Nevada regardless off classification.

Pyramid Lake scored the first 21 points of the contest on its way to a 60-26 win, as McDermitt dropped to 7-2 on the season.

The Lady Bulldogs’ only points of the first quarter came on a 3-pointer by Nicolette Northrup.

McDermitt cut the lead under 20 points at 28-11 after baskets by Kiarra Crutcher, Northrup and Vina Tom, only to see Pyramid Lake end the second quarter on a 16-1 run to lead 44-12 at halftime.

Tom knocked down a 3-pointer midway through the third quarter, but the Lakers converted consecutive baskets to create a running clock at 50-15.

Sadie Hinkey, Northup and Tom each scored five points for McDermitt, Riata Palmer added four, Kiarra Crutcher three, Brianna Sherburn two and Alexis Scott one.

McDermitt is in Reno for the Christmas Classic and the Lady Bulldogs played the Douglas JV and Spanish Springs JV on Wednesday in pool play.

Bracket play will take place Thursday and Friday with seeding determined by pool play results.

McDermitt begins Northern 1A East play on Friday, Jan. 6, in Jackpot.

The Lady Bulldogs play at Wells on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m.

McDermitt is back home on Jan. 13 and 14 to host Owyhee and Carlin, respectively.
