Pershing County boys basketball team goes 1-1 for the week

The Mustangs had two close games this week, one loss and one win. On Thursday Pershing hosted Pyramid Lake.

The game ended at 57-54, with the Mustangs trailing by three points. Saturday the Mustangs traveled to Smith Valley. This time they won by three points, 58-55. Pershing County now stands at 4-6 overall.

On Wednesday Dec. 21 the Mustangs hosted Virginia City. Results were not available at press time.

“Both games we came out slow and had to fight back. We came up short against Pyramid Lake but prevailed against Smith Valley. We have to realize that basketball is a game of runs and we have to dominate that category always,” said coach Jesse Canchola.

Luis Sanchez hit a big 3-pointer in the Pyramid Lake game which energized the team. Travis Donaldson led the scoring against Smith Valley. Noel Zaldivar’s focus on defense turned the Smith Valley game around for the Mustangs.

“Once we figure out that we can’t pick and choose when to play hard we will be tough. We are also trying to figure out our rotations. It’s likely that our starters will change according to match-ups,” Canchola said. “The future is bright. We just have to stay the course.”

On Tuesday Jan. 3, the Mustangs travel to Portola. They start league play at home against Incline on Friday Jan. 6, at 7:30 p.m.
