Pershing County boys basketball drops two games

It was a challenging week for the Pershing County boys basketball team. On Friday night they hosted Incline, the top team in the Northern 2A. 

Pershing County wrestlers competes at Sparks Railroader Invitational

It’s hard to believe but the wrestling season is at its midway point. Last weekend the Lovelock team competed in the Sparks Railroader Invitational Tournament, a varsity level event. Xavier Weatherman, Angelo Gibson, Jeffrey Elerick, Jake Henderson, Wyatt Hughes and Logan Hunt represented Pershing County High School.  “The coaching staff was proud of how the kids performed and competed,” said coach Mike Brooks.

Lowry rally falls short in overtime loss

The Lowry High School boys basketball team erased a 13-point third-quarter deficit against Fallon to send the game in to overtime, but the Greenwave withstood the rally to win 6158 in overtime in the Northern 3A East opener for both teams.

Lady Bucks bounce back from first loss, rout Greenwave

Coming off its first loss in nearly a year, the Lowry High School girls basketball team bounced back in a big way, with a 64-30 win over Fallon on Thursday, Jan. 5, in Winnemucca. It was the Northern 3A East opener for both teams, as the Lady Bucks improved to 13-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. The Greenwave dropped to 9-7 overall and 0-1 in the Northern 3A East.

Battle Mountain basketball teams get back on the floor

The last time the Battle Mountain High School basketball teams were on the floor in game action was way back on Dec. 10 at the Comstock Classic in Virginia City.

US to let MLB stars play for Cuba in World Baseball Classic

The United States will permit Major League Baseball players from Cuba to represent their home country in the World Baseball Classic next year. The decision announced Saturday in a news release by the Baseball Federation of Cuba (FCB) could be a big step in once again turning Cuba’s national team into heavy hitters on an international stage.

Lowry boys pick up one win at Rail City Classic

The Lowry High School boys basketball team got a short Christmas break before playing in the Rail City Classic from Dec. 27-29 at Sparks High School. The Buckaroos picked up one win in their three-day stay and not stand at 6-6 overall and 4-0 in the Northern 3A.

Harber places seventh, Nichols eighth at Sierra Nevada Classic

The Lowry High School wrestling team had two grapplers medal at the Sierra Nevada Classic last week at the Reno Event Center. Jhett Harber placed seventh at 157 pounds and Coda Nichols was eighth at 113 pounds.

Lady Bulldogs play in Christmas Classic in Reno

The McDermitt High School girls basketball team spent the latter part of  Christmas break in Reno at the 2022 Christmas Classic. The Lady Bulldogs played in the JV bracket with larger schools from northern Nevada and won their first three games.

Blackshear has 20, Nevada knocks off Boise State 74-72

Kenan Blackshear’s 20 points, including a layup with 3.8 seconds left, helped Nevada defeat Boise State 74-72 on Dec. 29. The Broncos took a 72-71 lead on a layup by Pavle Kuzmanovic with 11 seconds to go. After a timeout, Blackshear took the ball to the basket for the lead. Boise State then turned the ball over just before the buzzer and fouled Jarod Lucas, who added a free throw for the final margin.

Lady Bucks win streak ends at 31 with loss to Reno

The Lowry High School girls basketball team picked up another three wins last week at the Varsity Elite Tournament at McQueen High School in Reno, but also saw a streak come to an end. The Lady Bucks collected wins over Portola, Calif., Galena and Reed, but ran into a buzzsaw on the final day of the tournament, as Reno ended Lowry’s 31-game win streak with a 67-40 win. 

PCHS wrestlers ace Cougar Bash

Pershing County sent six wrestlers to the Cougar Bash at Silver Springs High School on Friday, Dec. 23.  The tournament drew almost 200 wrestlers from 16 schools, twice as many as last year.  “It was a large event compared to years past,” said coach Mike Brooks. The number of wrestlers made for a competitive day. Pershing’s wrestlers were up to the challenge. 

Scherer, Jimenez provide strong showing at Sierra Nevada Classic

The Battle Mountain High School wrestling team took three of its grapplers to Reno for the Sierra Nevada Classic that was held Dec. 28-29 at the Reno Event Center.

Nevada inks 17 in early signing period

Nevada Football opened the early signing period by signing 17 student-athletes into the Pack. The group of signees features 12 prep standouts and four incoming transfers.
