A handful of McDermitt High School basketball players received Northern 1A East postseason awards, which is selected by the league’s coaches. On the girls side, Vina Tom was named to the Northern 1A East first team and Cayla Crutcher was selected to the second team.
McKenzi Petersen signed with Dawson Community College in Glendive, Mont. Petersen plans to play volleyball and basketball for the Buccaneers. Giovani Sapien is headed to Missouri to play football for Culver Stockton College in Canton, Mo., and plans to study business management.
The Lowry High School track and field team was in Spring Creek this past Saturday and turned in a number of strong performances. Jovi Kuskie won pair of events in the 800 meters and 1,600 meters.
The rural basketball season came to a close on Saturday, March 5. In Division I, McDermitt took home the championship trophy. Notably the all-tourney MVP, Alexis Scott came from the Bulldogs’ team. Also markedly, Treal Scott was recognized for his sportsmanship throughout the day as well as the season.
The McDermitt High School track and field team opened its 2022 campaign this past Saturday in Elko County at the Spring Creek League Meet. A handful of 1A, 2A and 3A schools took part in the meet.
The Nevada High School Rodeo Association returned to action with its first spring rodeo on Feb. 19-20 in Pahrump. Humboldt County’s Emma Garijo won the pole bending average with a combined time of 41.886 to beat out Tayler Felton ay 41.996. Garijo won the first performance eat 20.733 and was third in the second go-around at 21.148. Garijo placed fourth in the barrel racing average at 26.027, which included a runner-up finish in the first performance at 17.730. Garijo was fifth in breakaway roping at 15.760. She was out of the top 10 in the first performance with a time of 12.850 but Garijo bounced back to win the second performance with a time of 2.91.
The Lowry High School swim team began its 2022 spring season in Fernley on Saturday, March 5, with duals against Damonte Ranch and Sage Ridge. The Buckaroos knocked off Sage Ridge, with the boys winning 39-24 and the girls at 36-29. Damonte Ranch beat the Lowry boys 76-36 and the Lowry girls 163-25. “They performed very well for our first meet,” said LHS coach McKenzie Rupp. “Many of the swimmers swam best times and we had five swimmers qualify for regionals.
After getting off to a winless start at the Mike Bearman Tournament in Reno to open the season, the Lowry High School baseball team bounced back in a big way with a pair of wins this past weekend on the road. The Buckaroos picked up their first victories of the season, starting with a come-from-behind 6-4 win in eight innings on Friday afternoon at Wooster High School.
After ending its tournament on a high note in Chico, Calif., the Lowry High School softball team opened Northern 3A play this past weekend on the road in Washoe County. The Lady Bucks took on Wooster on Friday afternoon and beat the Colts 17-0 in three innings and did the same to Sparks on Saturday, beating the Railroaders 17-0 on three innings as well.
Matt Bradley had 24 points to help San Diego State fend off Nevada 79-78 on Saturday night. Bradley made 11 of 12 foul shots and added six rebounds for the Aztecs (21-7, 13-4 Mountain West Conference).
The regular season to the Rural basketball season came to an end on Saturday, Feb. 19, with the first game of the championship round being played as well.
The chief executives of Bally’s Corp. and Gaming and Leisure Properties didn’t reject the idea of the Oakland A’s building a Major League Baseball stadium on the same site as the Tropicana Las Vegas during quarterly conference calls last week. But they never mentioned the team nor the facility while saying the 34-acre location at the corner of the Strip and Tropicana Boulevard could be improved with additional amenities, such as a baseball stadium, beyond the aging 1,500-room Rat Pack-era casino-hotel.
The Lowry High School softball team opened its season this past weekend with a two-day tournament in Chico, Calif. The Lady Bucks dropped its first three games of the year on Friday and bounced back with two victories on Saturday to finish the weekend at 2-3. Lowry lost to 13-2 Roseville, Calif., to begin the year on Friday and then dropped games to Inderkum (Calif.) 11-1 and Pleasant Valley (Calif) 13-3. The Lady Bucks beat Las Plumas (Calif) 7-6 on Saturday and Shasta (Calif. 21-2).
Lowry High Scholl seniors Cal Peters and Zach Fernandez were named to the Northern 3A all-league second team and honorable mention team, respectively, which is chosen by the league’s coaches.
Lowry High School sophomore Savanah Stoker was named the Northern 3A Most Valuable Player by the league’s basketball coaches. Stoker led the state of Nevada in scoring this year at nearly 23 points per game. Her 648 points this season were the 12th most in state history for a single season according to the NIAA record book. She also averaged 9.2 rebounds a game. In addition, she was named to the 3A all-state first team. Teammates Emily Backus and McKenzi Petersen joined Stoker on the Northern 3A all-league, first team. Backus averaged 12.3 points a game, while Petersen averaged 7.6 points and 7.4 rebounds a game.
