Petersen headed to Dawson Community College, Sapien playing for Culver Stockton

Two Lowry High School seniors singed letters on intent to continue their student/athletic careers.

McKenzi Petersen signed with Dawson Community College in Glendive, Mont. Petersen plans to play volleyball and basketball for the Buccaneers.  

During the volleyball season this past fall, Petersen was second on the team with 78 kills and she led the Lady Bucks with 78 blocks.

Petersen was a member of the state champion girls basketball team that beat Spring Creek in Las Vegas. Petersen was named to the Northern 3A all-league, first team and the 3A all-state, second team. Petersen averaged 7.6 points a game, 7.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.3 steals a game.

Petersen will join one other Nevada player on the Dawson women’s basketball team in White Pine’s Eva Kingston. 

The Buccaneers basketball team finished 20-12 this past season, losing in the NJCAA Region XIII semifinals.

This past season there were no Nevada players on the Dawson volleyball roster. The Buccaneers were 14-16 this past fall.       

Giovani Sapien is headed to Missouri to play football for Culver Stockton College in Canton, Mo., and plans to study business management. 

Sapien was named the Northern 3A East Offensive Player of the year this past fall for the Buckaroo football team.

Sapien was a first-team, Northern 3A first-team wide receiver and Northern 3A first-team returner.

Sapien caught 26 passes for 534 yards and seven touchdowns and rushed for 214 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns. He had two kickoff returns for touchdowns and one punt return.

Culver Stockton, a NAIA school, had an 8-3 record this past fall and had no Nevada players on the roster. The Wildcats feature players from California, Arizona, Washing, Utah and Arizona in the West, as well as players from around the country.
