The Nevada High School Rodeo Association held its High School and Junior High School Finals Rodeo at the Winnemucca Event Center from Thursday to Monday. Competitors that finished first through fourth in their respective events in the final average points from the year qualify for the National High School Finals Rodeo in July. Those that are fifth-25th in each event qualify for the Silver State International Rodeo in Winnemucca.

Lowry High School’s Erick Bergenheier, Jordan Bills and Txema Bengochea were names to the Northern 3A East all-league, second team, which is selected by the league’s coaches.
It was something of a miracle that the Pershing County High School softball team competed in the state tournament in Reno last Thursday. They lost their star catcher to a non-sports injury before the regional tournament but still qualified due to their teamwork.
Lowry High School’s Landon Esquivel finished sixth at the NIAA 3A State Boys Golf Championship held May 16-17 at Toiyabe Golf Club in Washoe Valley, Esquivel shot rounds of 84 and 86 for a two-day total of 170. Esquivel was the only Lowry player in the state tournament. He was a all-league, first-team selection in the Northern 3A this year.
McDermitt High School’s Loni Tobey and Kess Hinkey competed at the NIAA 1A State Track and Field Championship this past weekend at Liberty High School in Henderson. Tobey, a sophomore, set a personal best in the discus with a throw of 82 feet, 1 inch to place fifth.
The Nevada State Junior High and High School Rodeo Finals take place this week and Memorial Day at the Winnemucca Event Center.
Lowry High School junior Nomar Aguirre and senior Sydnee Pettis came back home from the NIAA 3A State Championships at Liberty High School with a little extra hardware. Aguirre won state titles in the shot put and discus this past weekend.
Five Lovelock athletes qualified to compete at the NIAA 2A State Track and Field Championship in Henderson last Friday and Saturday. Hayley Montes, Josiah Hunt, Luis Sanchez, Izayuh McGlothin and Denzel Zaldivar got there by hard work and determination.
