Eight 10-12 year old Little League all-star teams in District Three began play last weekend in Winnemucca to earn the honor of moving on to the state tournament in Boulder City. The Opening Ceremonies were held on the main Little League field Saturday, June 29th beginning at 6 p.m. The night featured a pitching contest, a homerun derby, a dunk tank, and a movie night was held on the field. The games began early on Sunday, June 30 at 8 a.m. with Silverada (Dayton) taking on Walker River (Yerington). Silverada took down Walker River 9-7 to move on in the winner’s bracket, and then the Winnemucca boys squared off against High Desert (Fernley) at 10:30 a.m. High Desert took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, and neither team scored again until Fernley tacked on another run in the fifth for a 2-0 advantage. In the bottom of the sixth Winnemucca rallied to tie it up 2-2 and send the game into extra innings.
Winnemucca Gold Rush hosted four fields of softball action last Saturday, June 29 – Sunday, June 30 at the Sports Complex, and 19 teams of all ages came out to compete from all over the state. The 8U and 14 U squads both reigned supreme over their competition on a beautiful Winnemucca weekend.
The Winnemucca 9-11 year-old Little League all-star team went to Carlin determined to secure a spot at the state tournament in Boulder City on July 17. The Winnemucca boys had a first-round bye in the tournament, and then they matched up against Ruby Mountain (Spring Creek) on Friday who defeated Elko 16-4 in the first round on Thursday. Winnemucca started strong on Friday night with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and then held Ruby Mountain scoreless throughout the four inning affair on their way to a 10-0 victory.
The Ladies Golf Club held the O.N.E.S. Golf Tournament at the Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday. .
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) held a board of control meeting on Tuesday, June 18 and proposed some significant changes that would affect Lowry High School athletics in the years to come. All proposed changes still have to be approved and/or added to the Nevada Administrative Codes. The Northern 3A could be split into east and west divisions under the proposed changes, with Truckee, Sparks, South Tahoe, and three teams moved from 4A/5A comprising the West.
Lowry High School Hall of Famer Nathan Green put on the second annual Crush It Basketball Camp last Monday through Thursday at the Winnemucca Boys and Girls Club. The kids were broken into three separate age groups to ensure that they could receive personal attention to their specific skill sets. The 3-4 graders took the morning session, with 5-6 graders going next, and the afternoon session was attended by 7-9 graders.
Southern Oregon University’s Daranda Hinkey brought four of her college basketball friends to McDermitt High School this past week to help teach K-12 kids the basics of the game.

The Winnemucca Sports Complex was host to eight co-ed softball teams last Saturday to raise money for Quinton Guilbert’s battle against Leukemia. Guilbert is 14 years old and will be a freshman at Lowry High School in the fall. He travels to Reno weekly for treatments and the family needs help with all of the expenses. Dark Purple took home the title against Screw Leukemia in an extra inning game 10-8. TWP took third place and the Red Hot Potatoes finished fourth. Donations can be made at any Wells Fargo location to the “Team Q Donation Fund.”
University of Nevada senior guard Cody Martin was selected by the Charlotte Hornets with the 36th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft held tonight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Martin returns to his home state as he is from Mocksville, N.C. Martin is the first Wolf Pack player selected in the NBA Draft since Luke Babbitt and Armon Johnson were taken in the 2010 NBA Draft. Babbitt was the 16th pick of the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves and Johnson was the 34th overall selection by the Portland Trail Blazers. Martin played two seasons for the Pack and helped the team capture back-to-back Mountain West regular season titles. Nevada advanced to the NCAA Tournament each season and reached the Sweet 16 in 2018.
The Jumpin June Drags were held on this past weekend at the Good Times Drag Strip. The 1/8-mile paved drag strip has a state of the art wireless timing system, front row bleacher seating, unlimited access to the pits, and is located just six miles down Jungo Road.
The Ladies Golf Club held the Shamble Golf Tournament at the Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday. . In the first flight Tatyana Carlson shot a 77 to win the low gross title.
Three local coed softball teams battled it out at the Winnemucca Sports Complex last Saturday at the 13th annual Cody Louk Memorial Softball Classic. Wright Foods, Gerhard Publishing, and the Humdingers/Jim Dandy Productions played a Round-Robin in the morning. That was followed by a hitting competition and then the tournament in the afternoon.
The Ranch Rodeo and Roping event held at the Winnemucca Events Complex on June 14-16 was a Western States Ranch Rodeo Association (WSRRA) sanctioned event that was host to almost 100 competitors. Branding, team roping, sort and doctor, a women’s race and a men’s race were the events that were contested last weekend.
