The Lowry High School girls basketball team took part in the Utah Valley State camp last week.

Winnemucca 8-10 year-old all-stars play in District 3 Tournament in Fernley

The Winnemucca 8-10 year-old all-stars were in Fernley earlier in the week to play in the District 3 Tournament. Winnemucca dropped both of its games, losing to Elko and Ruby Mountain (Spring Creek).

National Junior High School Finals Rodeo begins

The Nevada State High School and Junior High School finals were held in Las Vegas at Horsemen’s Park on May 24-28.   Placing in the top four spots, qualified contestants to represent Nevada at the National Finals.

Reno Rodeo offers family-friendly events

Logan and Mentaberry represent in Casper

Former Humboldt County Rodeo Club stars Luke Logan and Shaun Mentaberry from College of Southern Idaho both competed in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Finals last week in Casper, Wyo. Mentaberry finished 17th in saddle bronc with a three-day point total of 186  points. Mentaberry scored 63.5 points in his performance and 58.5 in the second. Mentaberry rode his bronc in all three performances, scoring 64 points in the finale. However, he didn't qualify for the short go.

Reed, Murray take home top senior student-athlete awards

A two-time conference champion in swimming and a three-time All-Mountain West football star have been selected as the recipients of the year’s most outstanding senior student-athlete awards at the University of Nevada for 2018-19.  Rebecca Murray, who won back-to-back MW titles in the 100 freestyle as a junior and senior to go along with a slew of academic honors including Nevada’s Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award this spring, was voted the winner of the Ruth I. Russell Award as Nevada’s outstanding female senior student-athlete.

Winnemucca junior all-stars drop opening game at District 3 Tournament

The Winnemucca Little League junior all-stars opened play in the District 3 Tournament on Sunday morning in Fernley with an 11-1 loss to Walker River (Yerington). Winnemucca was back in action on Tuesday morning to play either Walker River or High Desert (Fernley). Results were not available at press time.

The Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club was started in 1957 and has maintained their Tuesday routine starting at 9 a.m. March through October ever since. 

US catches heat for World Cup goal celebrations

The goals were one thing, the celebrations another. The U.S. women’s national team faced criticism following its record-breaking 13-0 rout of Thailand on Tuesday night. The win set a World Cup record for goals and margin of victory. Alex Morgan alone had five goals, matching the most in one game in tournament history. But there were questions about whether the Americans should have celebrated goals once the game was well in hand. Were the three-time World Cup champions being unsportsmanlike, or merely sending a message to the rest of the field?

Winnemucca junior all-stars getting ready for District 3 Tournament in Fernley

Fernley is hosting the three-team Junior Little League District 3 all-star tournament that gets underway starting on June 16.  The Juniors are age 13-15, and the Little League Board and coaches select the players and the coach. Jon Brooks coached the  Winnemucca Blue this season and he is the coaching the all-stars for the third consecutive season. “I would like to go in and win a couple of games, but I don’t want to put too many expectations on these boys because we have a lot of first year all-stars,” Brooks said. “Walker River and Fernley usually bring some pretty good ball clubs to tournaments like this, so it is going to be tough. I am hoping for some good quality play and some learning opportunities for these boys and that we have a good time.”

Ladies Golf Club results

The Ladies Golf Club held the Pro Posse Golf Tournament at the Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday. 

Inaugural LHS soccer clinic held with Reno 1868FC

Seventy-seven kids ages five-17 came to the Lowry High School soccer field for a three day soccer clinic last week. The kids received coaching from several professional soccer players and assistant coach Chris Malenab of the Reno 1868FC team, as well as the LHS soccer coaches.

Triple Crown winners to headline 51st annual Governor’s Dinner

 In its first 50 years, the Governor’s Dinner has seen appearances from Hall of Fame athletes to all-time Wolf Pack great to legendary coaches. The 51st annual Governor’s Dinner adds a new twist on Northern Nevada’s premier summer social event: an evening with horse racing’s royalty. Bob Baffert, a two-time Triple Crown winner and a five-time Kentucky Derby champion as a trainer, and Mike Smith, a Hall of Fame jockey who rode Justify to the Triple Crown last year, will headline the Nevada athletics department annual event on the grounds of the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City next month.
