Lowry holds on to beat Fernley, improve to 4-0

It’s just four weeks into the season, but there might be something special happening with the 2019 version of the Lowry High School football team. The Buckaroos improved to 4-0 on the season and 3-0 in the Northern 3A with a 34-28 victory over Fernley on Friday night in Winnemucca. It was Lowry’s first win over Fernley since the 2013 season. “This team's tenacity is unreal right now,” said LHS coach Taua Cabatbat. “Their run game was killing us at the beginning and we made some adjustments. That’s a tough team right there. It feels good to finally beat those guys.”  After Lowry forced Fernley to punt on its first drive in three plays, the offenses went into full gear from there. The Buckaroos used up just a little over five minutes to score on their opening possession.

After taking a couple weeks off, it is full steam ahead for the Lowry High School cross country team for the rest of the fall. The Buckaroos headed to the Sierra Nevada mountains last Friday for the North Tahoe Kiwanis Mountain Motivational Invitational in Tahoe City, Calif. “We had a great day of racing,” said LHS coach Kathy Norcutt. “Both my freshmen girls medaled.” Sophomore Jovi Kuskie picked up from where she left off in the opening race of the season in Gardnerville. She won the 3.3-mile varsity girls race in a time of 25 minutes, 6:69 seconds. She dueled Mammoth’s Jordyn Harper for much of the race, pulling away late to win by nearly three seconds.  “Jovi won in a heated battle,” Norcutt said. “The girl she beat from Mammoth is a fierce competitor. The race came down to the final 400 meters with Jovi out kicking her at the end. It was very exciting.” Mammoth’s Rhona McChensey was third at 26:23.55, Jennifer Ruiz from Modoc was fourth at 26:37.72 and Calaveras’ Katrina Borchin (26:42.34) rounded out the top five.

We are still happy with the win, but moving forward we still have to work 10 times harder to get where we want to be.” The Buckaroos made their way through the five games at 3-1-1 and are second in the Northern 3A ‘A’ division behind Sparks. Lowry holds off Spring Creek to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 2013

The last time the Lowry High School football team started 3-0 was 2013, when the Buckaroos reached the 3A state semifinal before falling to Faith Lutheran. Six years later and the Buckaroos are 3-0 again after a thrilling 21-20 win over Spring Creek on Friday night in Winnemucca. “It was a hard-fought game. We expected Spring Creek to come down and do what they did,” Lowry head coach Taua Cabatbat said. “I think that both teams played well and we were fortunate to come out on top. Jace (Mentaberry) kept his cool when he needed to and got the extra point that we needed to win the game tonight. I am pleased with the way that the boys are responding to the start of the season. When we need them they show up. Starting the season 2-0 has not happened in a long time; these kids are confident in what they are doing, but they know that from here on out is a test; that is how we prepare, we study each opponent each week and do our best to game plan for what we have coming up.”
