The Northern 3A girls golf season is quickly coming to a close and the Lowry High School girls were in action on Monday and Tuesday. The Lady Bucks traveled to Dayton on Monday to play the tough Arnold Palmer-designed Dayton Valley Country Club. Dayton Valley annually hosts PGA qualifying. Kaitlyn Hales led the group of three Lowry golfers with a round of 104, which was good for sixth overall. Bailey Hayes shot an 114 and Angelina Martinez finished at 117.
Cole McDonald threw four touchdown passes, including three to Cedric Byrd II, and Hawaii beat Nevada 54-3 on Saturday night in the Mountain West Conference opener for both teams. After suffering its first loss of the season and being shut out by Truckee the week before, the Lowry High School football team bounced back in a big way this past Friday night in Winnemucca. Lowry and North Valleys combined for 47 points in the second quarter on a rainy night, but the Buckaroos were the ones that pulled away late for a 48-27 win. Lowry improved to 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the Northern 3A. “It was a good way to bounce back,” said LHS coach Taua Cabatbat. “We knew what North Valleys was going to come out and do. Our kids stepped up and had a lot to prove. They took a hard one last week against Truckee. We turned it on in the second half and pulled away.” The Buckaroos turned the ball over on downs twice in the opening quarter and punted once, as the Panthers drew first blood three minutes into the second quarter on a 2-yard run by Grasen Ternora.
Defying the NCAA, California’s governor signed a first-in-the-nation law Monday that will let college athletes hire agents and make money from endorsements — a move that could upend amateur sports in the U.S. and trigger a legal challenge. Under the law, which takes effect in 2023, students at public and private universities in the state will be allowed to sign deals with sneaker companies, soft drink makers or other advertisers and profit from their names and likenesses, just like the pros. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and others cast the law as an attempt to bring more fairness to big-money college sports and let athletes share in the wealth they create for their schools.
Gail Piquet shot a low gross score of 99 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club gross/net tournament held Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.

The set was tied at 7-7, when Elko went on a 5-1 run. A pair of kills by Eva Andradottir kept Lowry within five points at 15-10, only to see Elko pull away to 20-11 lead and win the set. Elko kept the momentum going, scoring the first seven points of the second set and eventually building a 12-1 lead. The Lady Bucks grinded their way back into the set after kills by Reece Kalkoske and Maestrejuan and an ace by Franklin. Elko used a late run in the set to pull away despite two more kills from Maestrejuan.
The Lowry High School cross country team made its annual trip to Boise, Idaho, last weekend for the Bob Firman Invitational. Muriel Jones from Jackson High School won the race at 18:53.8. Centennial’s Aubrey Thueson was second at 19:14.2. “Jovi just keeps on getting better and better,” said LHS coach Kathy Norcutt. “She is learning to race every time she hits the course. The Lowry High School boys soccer team has gotten off to a quick start this year but faced a team that has been a thorn in its side for the past couple of years. The Buckaroos have had their challenges in beating Spring Creek in the past. But that changed Tuesday night in Winnemucca, as Lowry scored twice in the first half and used a late penalty kick to hold on to beat Spring Creek 3-1. “It’s a win that I wanted bad,” said LHS coach Steve Swanson. “It’s one of our bigger rivals and we have had our troubles with them. We had not beaten them in a couple years, but you can’t say that anymore. It’s not that we beat them with the score, but the boys played very well today. They played the way I wanted them to.”
