Ladies Golf Club results

The Ladies Golf Club held a team Scramble Golf Tournament at the Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday that resulted in a six-person tie. 

Lady Bucks drop Northern 3A opener to Greenwave

The Lowry High School volleyball squad began the regular season at home this year against Churchill County (Fallon) and struggled early, but the Lady Bucks came back strong and pushed the Greenwave to four sets in a 3-1 loss. Lowry started off the first set slow in front of its home crowd, trailing  8-1 before coming back a little in the middle of the set.  However, the Greenwave pulled away to win the first set 25-16.

Nevada shocks Purdue with last-second field goal

When Nevada quarterback Carson Strong and kicker Brandon Talton attended high school in Vacaville, California, neither paid close attention to the other. They were a year apart and attended rival schools. But last year, when they met up in Vacaville at a football game, Strong pitched Nevada to Talton.

Buckaroos shock Panthers

The Lowry High School boys soccer team pulled off one its biggest victories in recent history with a 3-1 win over North Valleys on Saturday afternoon in Winnemucca.

Bucks rally in second half to beat Railroaders

The Lowry High School football  team started the Northern 3A season on the road last Friday night and returned with a resounding 25-7 victory over the Sparks Railroaders for its second win of the year and first in league play. “The kids came out a little slow and sluggish in the first half,” LHS coach Taua Cabatbat said. “We were chewing up some yardage and getting some big gains, putting some drives together. We just could not finish in the red zone. We did some good things, but in the second half they turned it on and competed and finished.” Lowry had a number of chances to score in the first half. The Buckaroos had the ball inside the Railroaders' 15-yard line three times in the first half but could not produce any points.

Lowry gym has a new floor —

The new gym floor at Lowry High School got a much-needed makeover before the start of school. The project was part of the ongoing Humboldt County School District bond projects. The gym is used for P.E. and various athletic events.  

Warriors hit the trail on a new season

Last season the eighth-grade Winnemucca Junior High School girls basketball team had a stellar season, losing only one game all year. WJHS starts the 2019 season on the road in Carson with a round-robin tournament at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6 and on Saturday Sept. 7 they go to Fernley for an 8:30 a.m. tip-off.

The Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club held the Women’s Championship Golf Tournament at the Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course over the last two weeks, and Gail Piquet was the special winner over-all. 

Lowry volleyball wins twice in Yerington

The Lowry High School volleyball squad started the season at a preseason tournament in Yerington on Aug. 23-24, garnering wins against Pershing County (Lovelock) and Smith Valley, while going down to Wooster, Damonte Ranch, North Tahoe and Mammoth. The Lady Bucks lost to Wooster in two sets to start the tourney, but then they rallied to defeat Lovelock and Smith Valley on Friday. “They did really well," said first-year LHS coach Skylar Estes. "We played Wooster first from the 4A and the girls came out and really contested with them, that was exciting. From there we were able to carry that play throughout the day. We ended up winning 2-out-3 games on Friday, which put us in the gold pool.”

Lady Bucks hit the road to start things kicking

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes you tie, and sometimes you do all three on the same road trip. The Lowry High School girls soccer squad started the season with a tournament in South Lake Tahoe last Friday and Saturday under first-year varsity coach Misty Stene and went down in the first game against Pahrump Valley 6-4. “We did well,” Stene said. “We lost our first game, but it was pretty close.”  The Trojans led 3-2 after the first period, with Emily Backus and Ariana Galindo finding the net for Lowry, and both teams repeated their efforts in the second period for the 6-4 final.

Action heats up at raceway

The Winnemucca Regional Raceway (WRR) was smoking last Friday night with 16 drivers tearing up the dirt track for the second-to-last run of the season.

Lowry freshmen travel to Battle Mountain for scrimmage

While the Lowry High School junior varsity and varsity football teams were in Pahrump last Friday, the Buckaroo freshmen traveled to Battle Mountain on Saturday for a scrimmage with Battle Mountain, Pershing County, Spring Creek and Elko. Due to a handful of 3A teams not playing freshmen football this year, Lowry opens its season on Thursday, Sept. 5 at home against Spring Creek at 5 p.m.  

Lowry boys soccer nets win over Douglas in South Tahoe

The Lowry High School boys soccer team went to South Tahoe for a tune-up tournament last weekend against some tough competition from the 4A Division to get ready for its league-opener against Sparks at home on Friday.

Lowry rallies from 29-point deficit to shock Pahrump Valley

The Lowry High School varsity team traveled to Pahrump for a non-league game last Friday to whet their chops for their upcoming Northern 3A season.  Repeating their results from last year when they mounted a comeback to take down the Trojans at home 41-40, the Buckaroos overcame a 42-13 deficit with six minutes left in the third quarter to shock the Trojans 46-42 with an amazing comeback.

Kuskie grabs gold for Buckaroo runners

The Lowry High School cross country team started its season at the Douglas Class Races in Gardnerville last Friday. Lowry sophomore Jovi Kuskie took the only win of the day for the Buckaroos with a time of 16 minutes and 58 seconds, edging out Galena’s Sofia Schmidhuber (17:01).
