Garijo’s win at Fallon high school rodeo

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association made it latest stop in Fallon on April 16-17 and Humboldt County’s Emma Garijo and Lexi Garijo each won events in the average. Lexi Garijo earned the top spot in the breakaway average with a time of 6.83 seconds.  After placing sixth in the first performance, Garijo won the second performance at 2.570 and was the only competitor to break three seconds on the weekend.

Lady Bucks sweep road doubleheader from Spartans

After having no games during spring break and a trip to Las Vegas thrown in, the Lowry High School softball returned to Northern 3A East play this past Saturday with a road trip to Spring Creek. Coming off four straight losses in Las Vegas, the Lady Bucks got back on the winning track, sweeping the Spartans 10-1 and 15-6.  The series was set to begin on Friday in Elko County, but a snowstorm in Spring Creek had other ideas and the contest was moved to Monday. Results were not available at press time.

Chopp, Ayers wins two events at Eureka Invite

Battle Mountain senior Nolan Chopp swept the shot put and discus at the Eureka Invitational on Friday, April 15. Chopp set season-bests in each event, throwing the shot put 42 feet, 4 inches and the discus 120-0. Aydan Samuelson was the runner-up in the discus with a toss of 110-0 and the senior was fourth in the shot put at 37-0. Sean Bengoa set a personal best in the 100-meter dash to finish with a time of 11.84 and he ran a personal best as well in the 200 meters to place fourth in a time of 24.50. 

Buckaroos drop doubleheader to Spartans

The Lowry High School baseball team saw its postseason chances take a hit after dropping a doubleheader in Spring Creek this past Saturday. The Spartans won the opener 3-0 and completed the sweep in the nightcap, winning 10-2. The series was scheduled to start on Friday but it was postponed due to weather and snow in Spring Creek. The game was played Monday and results were not available at press time.

Lowry golfers finish third on home course; fourth in Fallon

After nearly three weeks off, the Northern 3A boys golf season picked back up last week with tournaments in Fallon (April 19) and Winnemucca on April 20.

Pershing County baseball team drops three games to Yerington

Some readers may remember the dialogue between Lucy and Charlie Brown.  The Peanuts characters created by American cartoonist Charles Schulz often competed in sports, including baseball. Lucy once told Charlie Brown that you learn more when you lose. “Well, then I must be the smartest person in the world!” he replied. The Pershing County Mustangs baseball team hosted Yerington last Tuesday and lost 19-0.  The home crowd shivered in the cold and wind, as loyal as ever. 

Yerington takes three games from Pershing County in Northern 2A battle

It was a clash of the softball titans. Last Tuesday (April 19), Pershing County hosted Yerington for the first of a three-game-series. Yerington won (7-4). The competitors finished up in Yerington this past Saturday with Lovelock dropping both games 12-2 and 10-0. Each team began the series undefeated in the 2A. Both rank at the top of the league. The Lions are the defending regional champions. 

Lowry softball team goes 1-4 in Las Vegas tournament

With a change in the Northern 3A schedule, the Lowry High School softball team was going to be without a game for 20 days. Lowry was scheduled to play Fernley in Winnemucca this past weekend but the Vaqueros asked to move the games to the first weekend of May, so they could play in a tournament in Las Vegas.

i-80 Gold Corp donates helmets to Winnemucca Little League

i-80 Gold Corp provided the Winnemucca Little League with 150 new batting helmets that will keep the young players safe for the next five years. Victor Harrell, i-80 Gold Safety & Health Superintendent, was on hand to throw out the first pitch during opening ceremonies on Saturday, April 9.

The Lowry High School junior varsity baseball and softball team were busy last week with three games each.

Whitted, Backus win events at Northwest Invite at McQueen HS

The full compliment of the Lowry High School track and field team was back in action this past Saturday at the Northwest Invite at McQueen High School in Reno. The Buckaroos were joined by six other 3A schools, nine 5A schools and a handful of 1A and 2A schools. Emily Backus and Hannah Whitted turned in event victories for the Lowry girls. Whitted won the high jump, as she cleared the bar at 5 feet, 4 inches.  Backus had a number of strong performances, including a season-best leap of 16 feet, 4 inches to win the long jump.

Pershing County track and field team back from Northwest Invite in Reno

On Saturday, Apr. 16, the PCHS track team competed in the Northwest Invitational. McQueen High School in Reno hosted the event.  Luis Sanchez and Efrain Gonzalez raced in the 100 and 200 meters. Brayden Wagner threw the shot put and discus, setting a personal record in discus (108-08). 

Lowry boys knock off North Valleys

The Lowry High School boys swim team notched a dual win over North Valleys this past Friday at Alf Sorenson Pool in Reno.  The Buckaroos beat the Panthers 70-47, Garret Jensen posted a victory in the 200 individual medley with a time of 3 minutes, 2.93 seconds and he placed second in the 100-yard freestyle at 1:06.59. 

Longhorns drop three to Lakers

Mother Nature left the Battle Mountain and North Tahoe high school baseball teams in a struggle to find a place to play their three-game Northern 2A series. The games were scheduled to take place in Tahoe City, Calif., but recent snow storms did not allow that to happen. The series still took place but in two different locations. The opening game on Friday was played at Golden Eagle Regional Park in Sparks, with North Tahoe winning 11-1. The two squads moved to Pershing County High School in Lovelock on Saturday and the Lakers swept a doubleheader 13-3 and 16-1. The Longhorns dropped to 9-0 overall and 5-6 in the Northern 2A.
