Kyle Busch backed into the record book by stealing a win at dirt-covered Bristol Motor Speedway. That’s what he’d say if it had been anyone else, right? Busch won his first race of the season Sunday night by sliding past the leaders as Tyler Reddick and Chase Briscoe spun racing for the win. Busch tied Hall of Famer Richard Petty’s NASCAR record for victories in consecutive years at 18.
Apparently, no one in the Northern 2A want to play the Battle Mountain High School softball team. For the third time this year, the Lady Longhorns had a league three-game series wiped off the board. Silver Stage and Incline forfeited games earlier this season and North Tahoe did the same this past weekend.
With spring break behind them, the Lowry High School baseball team was back on the field this past weekend for a three-game series against league-leading Fernley. Last on the field for a game on April 2, the Buckaroos were sluggish in the opener on Friday against the Vaqueros but ended the day in spectacular fashion. After collecting just two hits and striking out 11 times in the first five innings, Lowry scored two runs apiece in the sixth and seventh innings to walk off in style with a 4-3 win.
After thinking about a couple different spots in Idaho and Oregon, Lowry High School senior Jovi Kuskie is headed to Caldwell, Idaho, and the College of Idaho to further her cross country and track career.
A tough decision paid off when the Pershing County Mustangs baseball team hosted Lowry JV last Tuesday. Each team scored three runs in the first inning. Pershing took an early lead in the second when Aaron Kienbaum drew a walk, scoring one run. “We played a good game and saw our bats come to life against a JV team that is actually an older team than we are,” said Coach Jared Jensen. The Mustangs notched four runs in the fourth inning. Izayuh Mcglothin and Conner Fecht singled. Tyler Miller grounded out. The Buckaroos fought back.
It was more like football than softball weather last Tuesday when Pershing hosted Lowry JV for a non-league matchup. Pershing County pulled off the win (16-6), bringing their record to 17-1-1 overall and 12-0 in the 2A. The cold weather appeared to energize the Mustangs. Taylor Garland struck out nine Buckaroos, surrendering six runs on two hits over the five innings. Aaliyah Allen handled the catching.

When the high school basketball season began last November, long-time Lowry High School boys basketball coach Chad Peters knew it was going to be his final one in nearly 20 years as head coach of the Buckaroos. After missing the 2020-21 season due to the Covid pandemic, basketball was back this school year but the coach did not want to make it about himself, as he took on a team with not a single player having varsity playing experience. Despite a rough start and some bumps in the road, the Buckaroos advanced to the Northern 3A Regional semifinals, before being eliminated by eventual state champion Elko.
The Pershing County softball team continues to gain momentum at a critical point in the season. This past Tuesday, April 5, they traveled to Tahoe City and blanked the Lakers, 15-0. North Tahoe decided to forfeit Saturday’s doubleheader in Lovelock.
