Crutcher wins shot put at Crane Invitational

After having its last two meets canceled, the McDermitt High School track and field team was back in action on Tuesday, April 26, at the Crane Invitational in Crane, Ore.

Kuskie wins 800, 1,600 meters at Bob Shaffer Classic

Lowry High School senior Jovi Kuskie picked up two individual victories at the Bob Shaffer Classic in Truckee this past Saturday.  Kuskie ran the 800 meters in a time of 2 minutes, 35.31 seconds and she set a personal best in the 1,600 meters at 5:44.83. Kuskie placed eight in the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 29,37 and she placed 10th in the 400 meters with a time of 66.81. Freshman Ashlyn Botttoms was seventh in the pole vault, as she cleared the bar at 6-0. Fellow freshman Brooklyn Swensen placed 21st in the 1,600 meters at 7:20 and she set a personal best in the 800 meters to finish at 3:43.43.

Lowry drops three to Churchill County

A tight race for one of the six playoff berths for the upcoming Northern 3A Regional Softball championships, got that much tougher for Lowry High School after dropping three games to Churchill County in Fallon this past weekend. Lowry lost the opening game on Friday 11-1 and were swept in a doubleheader 14-7 and 8-5 on Saturday to fall to 12-12 overall and 4-5 in the Northern 3A East.

Buckaroos swept by Greenwave

The Lowry High School baseball team rounded out its road schedule this season with a three-game road trip in Fallon this past weekend to take on league-leading Churchill County. The Greenwave won the opener on Friday 7-2 and swept a doubleheader 9-7 and 6-2 on Saturday to remain atop the Northern 3A East standings at 10-2. Lowry, who has lost eight games in a row, dropped to 6-18 overall and 3-9 in the Northern 3A East.

Lowry golfers second at Spring Creek; fourth in Elko

The Northern 3A and Lowry High School boys golf team was back on the course last week for a pair of tournaments in Elko County. The week began with a trip to Spring Creek on Monday, April 25, where the Buckaroo finished second with a round of 366. Truckee maintained its lead in the league, winning the tournament with a 347. Elko was third at 370 and Fernley (372) and Spring Creek (403) rounded out the top five. 

Ladies Golf Club results —

After a few weeks of poor weather, the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club was back on Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday, April 26, for the Tin Whistle tournament.

Lowry High School to host Northern 3A Regional Baseball and Softball Championships

Lowry High School in conjunction with the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) is proud to help the local economy by hosting the Northern Nevada Regional 3A Baseball and Softball Tournaments.  The tournaments will be held at Lowry High School from May 12-14 and a total of 12 teams (six for baseball and softball) will compete for two spots each in the state championships.

Lady Longhorns pick up one win against rival Pershing County

The Battle Mountain High School softball team all but clinched a spot in the Northern 2A Regional Championships with a come-from-behind win against rival Pershing County on Saturday in Battle Mountain. The three-game series tarted last week on Tuesday, April 26, in Lovelock with Pershing County holding on for a 7-6 win.  The series moved to Battle Mountain this past Saturday, with the Mustangs winning game one 13-2.  The Lady Longhorns trailed 11-10 in the series finale but score a pair of runs to secure a 12-11 win. The Lady Longhorns are 16-7 overall and 10-5 in the Northern 2A.

Battle Mountain sweeps three games from Pershing County

The Battle Mountain High School baseball team erased a six-game losing streak with three wins against rival Pershing County this past week. Battle Mountain traveled to Lovelock on Tuesday, April 26, and came away with a 4-3 victory.  The series moved over to Battle Mountain this past Saturday and the Longhorns swept the doubleheader 6-2 and 17-2.  Battle Mountain improved to 12-9 overall and 8-6 in the Northern 2A.

Lowry boys and girls swimmers sweep dual from Sparks

The Lowry High School boys and girls swim teams picked up dual wins against Sparks on Friday, April 22, at Northwest Pool in Reno. The Lowry girls beat the Railroaders 77-32 and the Buckaroo boys won 65-37. Evie Morgan led a 1-2-3 Lowry finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 19.05 seconds. Tajia Taylor was second at 1:22.44 and Zoey Thies (1:18.11) was third.

Whitted, Garcia headed to Finlandia for basketball, football

Lowry High School seniors Hannah Whitted and Joseph Garcia are going to have to start stocking up on some warm winter clothes come this fall and winter. Both student/athletes are headed to Hancock, Mich., and Finlandia University to continue their academic and athletic careers. The City of Hancock, founded in the 1850's by early copper explorers, is a progressive and welcoming city of 4,500 residents on the north shore of Portage Lake, and is the northernmost city in Michigan.

PCHS track and field team competes in Truckee

The Pershing County High School track team is rounding out the 2022 season with smiles on their faces.  They’ve dealt with wind and brutal weather conditions but remained upbeat. They’ve also helped the middle school team shave seconds off their times. 

Pershing County drops three to Battle Mountain

Pershing County baseball hosted rival school Battle Mountain on Tuesday. The Mustangs showed their fighting spirit but lost 4-3. The Longhorns scored a tie-breaking run late in the game and seized the win. Saturday, the Mustangs headed to Battle Mountain to finish the series. They lost the first game 6-2 but kept the score close. They dropped the last game 17-2.

Pershing County wins two of three games against rival Battle Mountain

Last week the Pershing County softball team played their rival school, Battle Mountain.  On Tuesday, April 26, the Mustangs hosted their rivals and beat them 7-6. On Saturday in Battle Mountain, the results were mixed. The Mustangs won the opener 13-2 but lost the final game of the series 12-11. Pershing County stands at 19-5-1 overall, and 14-4 in the Northern 2A.  

Bob Feist Invitational returns to Reno

Producers of the world’s richest one-day roping competition – the annual Bob Feist Invitational – moved the 45-year-old BFI to Oklahoma amid the pandemic after 37 years in Reno, but are bringing their $2.9 million event back to Reno for one “final showdown” this summer. In the last year of its contract with the Reno Rodeo, Ullman Peterson Events’ BFI will produce Championship Week this June, including the Resistol Reno Open presented by The Silver Legacy Resort & Casino.
