The Northern 3A and Lowry High School boys golf team was back on the course last week for a pair of tournaments in Elko County. The week began with a trip to Spring Creek on Monday, April 25, where the Buckaroo finished second with a round of 366. Truckee maintained its lead in the league, winning the tournament with a 347. Elko was third at 370 and Fernley (372) and Spring Creek (403) rounded out the top five.
The Pershing County High School track team is rounding out the 2022 season with smiles on their faces. They’ve dealt with wind and brutal weather conditions but remained upbeat. They’ve also helped the middle school team shave seconds off their times.
Pershing County baseball hosted rival school Battle Mountain on Tuesday. The Mustangs showed their fighting spirit but lost 4-3. The Longhorns scored a tie-breaking run late in the game and seized the win. Saturday, the Mustangs headed to Battle Mountain to finish the series. They lost the first game 6-2 but kept the score close. They dropped the last game 17-2.
Last week the Pershing County softball team played their rival school, Battle Mountain. On Tuesday, April 26, the Mustangs hosted their rivals and beat them 7-6. On Saturday in Battle Mountain, the results were mixed. The Mustangs won the opener 13-2 but lost the final game of the series 12-11. Pershing County stands at 19-5-1 overall, and 14-4 in the Northern 2A.
Producers of the world’s richest one-day roping competition – the annual Bob Feist Invitational – moved the 45-year-old BFI to Oklahoma amid the pandemic after 37 years in Reno, but are bringing their $2.9 million event back to Reno for one “final showdown” this summer. In the last year of its contract with the Reno Rodeo, Ullman Peterson Events’ BFI will produce Championship Week this June, including the Resistol Reno Open presented by The Silver Legacy Resort & Casino.
Some readers may remember the dialogue between Lucy and Charlie Brown. The Peanuts characters created by American cartoonist Charles Schulz often competed in sports, including baseball. Lucy once told Charlie Brown that you learn more when you lose. “Well, then I must be the smartest person in the world!” he replied. The Pershing County Mustangs baseball team hosted Yerington last Tuesday and lost 19-0. The home crowd shivered in the cold and wind, as loyal as ever.
It was a clash of the softball titans. Last Tuesday (April 19), Pershing County hosted Yerington for the first of a three-game-series. Yerington won (7-4). The competitors finished up in Yerington this past Saturday with Lovelock dropping both games 12-2 and 10-0. Each team began the series undefeated in the 2A. Both rank at the top of the league. The Lions are the defending regional champions.
A tough decision paid off when the Pershing County Mustangs baseball team hosted Lowry JV last Tuesday. Each team scored three runs in the first inning. Pershing took an early lead in the second when Aaron Kienbaum drew a walk, scoring one run. “We played a good game and saw our bats come to life against a JV team that is actually an older team than we are,” said Coach Jared Jensen. The Mustangs notched four runs in the fourth inning. Izayuh Mcglothin and Conner Fecht singled. Tyler Miller grounded out. The Buckaroos fought back.
It was more like football than softball weather last Tuesday when Pershing hosted Lowry JV for a non-league matchup. Pershing County pulled off the win (16-6), bringing their record to 17-1-1 overall and 12-0 in the 2A. The cold weather appeared to energize the Mustangs. Taylor Garland struck out nine Buckaroos, surrendering six runs on two hits over the five innings. Aaliyah Allen handled the catching.
Nevada football is set for the first ever Battle Born Showdown, sponsored by River City Logistics, on April 23 at 6 p.m. inside Mackay Stadium.
The Battle Mountain High School track and field team traveled Reno this past Friday for the North Valleys Relays. Nolan Chopp set a season best in the discus to place fifth with a toss of 117 feet, 10 inches. The senior placed eighth in the shot put with a season-best throw of 40-8.
The Pershing County softball team continues to gain momentum at a critical point in the season. This past Tuesday, April 5, they traveled to Tahoe City and blanked the Lakers, 15-0. North Tahoe decided to forfeit Saturday’s doubleheader in Lovelock.
The Pershing County Mustangs baseball team traveled to Tahoe City, Calif., on Tuesday, April 5. They lost the first game of the tripleheader against the North Tahoe Lakers by a score of 16-1. This past Saturday they played the last two games in Lovelock, losing 14-2 and 24-1.
Dozens of major leaguers, minor leaguers and tee ballers marched from the courthouse to Emmett Cook Jr. Field on Saturday. Once there, they played their first baseball games of the year.
Pershing County track and field sent eight athletes to the Battle Mountain Invitational this past Friday, Apr. 1. Results were not available at press time but Matt and Cassidie Fuller remain pleased with the team’s progress.
