Justin Thomas wrapped his arms around the 27-pound Wanamaker Trophy after winning his second PGA Championship, and thousands of fans ringing the 18th green amid the setting sun at Southern Hills showered him in adulation. Good thing they woke up in time for his Sunday charge. For nearly four full days, the year’s second major had been a major snooze, the cast atop the leaderboard a list mostly made up of also-rans searching for a moment stardom.

Not only did Brayden Wagner set a new personal record in the discus throw (117-01 feet). He brought home a fourth-place medal. And he just found out he’d be able to compete at state a few days before the tournament.
The Pershing County High School softball team made it to the state softball championship at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas last weekend. They played as the No. 2 team in the Northern 2A League.
The 2021-22 high school sports season comes to an end this weekend with the spring sports state championships.
Last weekend’s Northern 2A Regional Softball Tournament started out with West Wendover, Battle Mountain, Yerington and Pershing County – the top four teams in the 2A.
The Pershing County High School track and field team competed in the regional tournament at Reed High School this past weekend. Six athletes ran, jumped and threw, setting several personal records. “We are proud of them and all the blood, sweat and tears they gave this year,” said Matt Fuller. “All six athletes worked hard all season and gave it their best.”
There’s a new dimension to this year’s Mustang 5K. It’s still raising funds for football helmets, shoulder pads and video software.
The Pershing County track team competed in the Lowry Invitational last Saturday. Athletes from Battle Mountain, Elko, Lowry, McDermitt, Pyramid Lake and Round Mountain ran, jumped and threw in the last regular meet of the year. “It was a great track meet. We had multiple personal records set,” said Matt Fuller.
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) and One Nevada Credit Union are pleased to announce $20,000 in scholarship funds will be awarded for the NIAA / One Nevada Top Ten Student Athletes of the Year program. The student-athletes of the year awards are presented to the top students who excel in sports, maintain a high academic status, and volunteer in their community.
The regular season for the Lowry High School boys golf team and the rest of the Northern 3A came to a close last week at Genoa Lakes Golf Course with the South Tahoe High School tournament.
The final high school regional tournaments of the school year get under way throughout Northern Nevada this week. Lowry High School will host the Northern 3A baseball and softball regional championship, beginning Thursday and running through Saturday. In softball on Thursday, Lowry takes on Elko at 10 a.m., with the winner to face Fernley at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday. Churchill County takes on Spring Creek at 12:15 p.m. and the winner plays North Valleys at 4:15 p.m.
The Pershing County Mustangs baseball team finished their season this past week. They played three non-league games. Tuesday the Mustangs beat the visiting Hawthorne Serpents (8-4). On Wednesday, May 4, the Mustangs traveled to Lowry High School and lost 5-1 to the Buckaroo JV. They wrapped up the season at home on Friday, losing to Truckee (14-3). Pershing County ended the year at 3-23 overall, and 1-17 in the Northern 2A.
Pershing County High School softball coach Jordan McKinney can’t remember the last softball practice that wasn’t windy. “It makes it hard for my girls to practice catching fly balls,” she says. The wind didn’t slow down the Mustangs in their three non-conference games this past week. They remain on course heading towards zone and the state championship.
