It was a tough week for the Lowry High School volleyball team who suffered three losses, including two on its home floor. Lowry traveled to Reno on Tuesday, Sept. 27, and was defeated by Wooster in three sets. The match was originally set to be played in Winnemucca at the beginning of September but was postponed due to transportation issues for Wooster. Lowry was at home this weekend to host a pair of Lyon County schools. Dayton visited Winnemucca on Friday and went back home with a 25-22, 25-22 and 31-29 victory.
The Lowry High School boys soccer team extended its winning streak to three matches with a pair of wins in Lyon County this past weekend. Lowry traveled to Dayton on Friday and kept the Dust Devils winless on the season at 0-9, winning 6-1.
The McDermitt High School volleyball team took to its home court this past Friday to take on Wells. The Leopards swept the match 25-11, 25-25 and 28-26, as the Lady Bulldogs played with just five players at time due to an injury to Cayla Crutcher. McDermitt was scheduled to host Carlin on Saturday but that match was postponed due to Covid issues with the Railroaders. On Friday, Wells scored the first three points of the opening set, but McDermitt stayed within striking distance early on an ace by Nicolette Northrup and a kill by Breena Crutcher.
It was a mixed bag of results for the Lowry High School girls soccer team this past weekend on its home field. Lowry hosted Dayton on Friday and suffered a 3-1 loss to the Dust Devils. The match was tied at 1-1 after 40 minutes of play, but Dayton scored two second-half goals to secure the victory.
Vicki Celio shot a low-gross score of 99 to win the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club Gross and Net tournament held Tuesday, Sept. 28, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
Carson Strong threw for 263 yards and a touchdown, Toa Taua rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns and Nevada defeated Boise State 41-31 on Saturday. Nevada (4-1, 1-0), the pre-season favorite to win the Mountain West Conference's West division, snapped a six-game losing streak to the Broncos, dating back to 2010. Nevada last won in Boise in 1997. While Nevada coach Jay Norvell was all smiles after the game, he didn't seem surprised at the result. He was more ecstatic about the way his team won rather than breaking a long losing streak.
After enjoying success against teams in the Northern 3A West with three wins and a tie, the Lowry High School girls soccer team opened Northern 3A East play this past Thursday in Fallon against Churchill County.
For the first time, the Fallon Ladies Golf Club joined the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club for a tournament on Tuesday, Sept. 14, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course. Melissa Murphy shot a low-net score of 32 to win the first flight of the Eclectic tournament. Lori Woodland was second in the first flight at 32.5 and Fallon’s Rita Houifen (33.5) was third. Laurie Pickett claimed the top spot in the second flight at 32 and Fallon’s Chelle Dalager (33) placed second. Fallon’s Terri Peck was third with a round of 33.5.
The Winnemucca Junior High School seventh and eighth-grade girls basketball teams were on their home floor this past Friday afternoon to play Oasis Academy out of Fallon. The Bighorns beat the Warrior seventh graders 18-13 and the Oasis Academy eighth-graders defeated Winnemucca 30-17. Winnemucca is scheduled to be back home Saturday with games starting at 9 a.m.
Around this time of the year, the Lowry High School cross country team heads for Boise, Idaho, and the Bob Firman Invitational, a race considered one of the best in the West. However, the invitational was canceled this year and the Buckaroos made their way to Truckee last Saturday for the Truckee Invitational that featured around 35 teams from California and Nevada.
The winning ways continue for the Lowry High School volleyball team, as the squad extended its winning streak to five matches after an opening victory in Northern 3A East play.
After spending the first half of the season shorthanded and playing a tough crossover schedule against the Northern 3A West, the Lowry High School boys soccer team collected its first win of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 21, in Winnemucca with a 6-0 victory over Churchill County. Lowry is now 1-9 overall and 1-0 in the Northern 3A East.
What looked to be promising start for the Lowry High School football team on Friday night at Jerry Tobin Field in Winnemucca turned into the first loss of the season for the Buckaroos. Lowry held a 14-7 lead in the second quarter over Elko, only to see the rival Indians score the final 26 points of the night to win 33-14 and drop the Buckaroos to 4-1 on the season.
The Northern Nevada Racing Association held its annual September Memorial Races on Sept. 10-11 at the Food Times Drag Strip off Jungo Road. Jackpot, Pro, Sportsman and Quick 16 filled the weekend of action. There was also a racer appreciation BBQ for the drivers following the races.
