Wells knocks off McDermitt volleyball team

The McDermitt High School volleyball team took to its home court this past Friday to take on Wells.

The Leopards swept the match 25-11, 25-25 and 28-26, as the Lady Bulldogs played with just five players at time due to an injury to Cayla Crutcher.

McDermitt was scheduled to host Carlin on Saturday but that match was postponed due to Covid issues with the Railroaders.

On Friday, Wells scored the first three points of the opening set, but McDermitt stayed within striking distance early on an ace by Nicolette Northrup and a kill by Breena Crutcher.

The Leopards closed out the first set on a 9-2 run, as the Lady Bulldogs played with the five players.

Cayla Crutcher came back on the floor for McDermitt in the second set, but Wells led from the start and easily won the set 25-5.

Aided by a tip from Northrup and a kill by Laeloni Tobey, the Lady Bulldogs led 8-7 in the third set, forcing the Leopards to take a timeout. With the set tied at 17-17,

Cayla Crutcher shook off her ankle injury and served four straight aces to give McDermitt a 22-17 advantage. However, Wells rallied with six straight points to retake the lead at 23-22.

The back-and-forth set continued with McDermitt scoring the next two points to go in front at 24-23, only to see Wells stay alive and have set point at 25-24.

With the set tied at 26-26, the Leopards scored the final two points, including the match winner on an ace that hit off the top of net and dropping on the floor in front of the McDermitt front line.

McDermitt is scheduled to travel to Eureka on Friday and Owyhee on Saturday.
