The McDermitt High School girls basketball team was looking to sweep the season series with rival Owyhee this past Friday night in McDermitt, as the Lady Bulldogs celebrated the conclusion of their Winterfest week.
On Saturday, Jan. 15, the rural basketball season kicked off for the rural schools in Humboldt County. There have been a few changes this year with the changes, but all the athletes are happy to be back on the court. Denio did not partner with Fields this year and there are no Denio/Fields teams. In Division II, McDermitt only has one team, no White and Blue teams. Kings River only has a Division I team. Both Orovada and Paradise Valley have teams for all three divisions.
Minus its head coach and a few wrestlers, the Lowry High School wrestling team made the short trip to Fernley this past weekend for the Walter Marrietta Vaquero Classic.
In order to stay in the playoff contention that it wanted to, the Lowry High School boys basketball team was looking to pick up two more wins last week to finish out a stretch of four victories in five games. The Buckaroos did just that, beating Spring Creek and Wooster, but falling to rival Elko to stand at 11-7 overall, 3-2 in the Northern 3A East and 8-2 in the Northern 3A.
After enjoying double-digit wins for much of the season, the Lowry High School girls basketball team saw its first major test in the Northern 3A when it traveled to Spring Creek on Wednesday, Jan. 19. The Spartans came into the meeting with just one loss on the season and undefeated in league play and ranked No. 1 in the 3A and No. 7 in the state of Nevada my MaxPreps. The Lady Bucks had dropped three games on the season campaign but were also undefeated in league and ranked No.2 in the 3A and No. 10 in the state.
After spending nearly the first two months of the season on the road, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team saw action on its home floor for the first time this season. McDermitt hosted Wells on Thursday afternoon and the Leopards went back home with a 57-26 victory over the Lady Bulldogs. Wells scored the first 18 points of the contest, when freshman Laeloni Tobey ended the run with a basket near the hoop with 1:15 left in the opening quarter. Sophomore Taylor Killsback added a basket shortly after that and the Leopards led 20-4 after eight minutes of play.
The McDermitt High School boys basketball team found itself in an unfamiliar position this past weekend — on its home floor. After playing their first 14 games on the season on the road and having two previous home games canceled or postponed, the Bulldogs were ready to play in front of their home fans. “It was nice to be on our home floor after a 14-game road trip,” said MHS coach Jack Smith. “The kids were not feeling the best but battled through it and did a good job this weekend.”
Lowry High School honored a number of former athletes on Saturday afternoon, prior to the start of the varsity boys basketball game against Fernley. Earl Cornforth, Alicia Heiser and the 1958 Humboldt County High School football team was inducted into the Lowry/Humboldt County High School hall of Fame. In addition the 1992 Lowry boys and girls basketball and Lowry wrestling state championship teams were honored for their titles 30 years ago. It was the first time three teams from the same school swept state championships in a single winter season. The Lowry 2002 boys and girls state championship basketball teams were honored, as well as the 2012 state champion boys basketball team.
The McDermitt High School boys basketball team wrapped up a three-game road trip to start Northern 1A East play. McDermitt made the long trip to Owyhee this past Friday and suffered a 53-28 loss to the Braves. Owyhee held McDermitt to single digits in the first three quarters and jumped out to a 21-5 lead in the opening eight minutes of play. The advantage increased to 35-11 at the break. The Bulldogs did out score the Braves 11-3 in the fourth quarter.
If you look at the scoreboard from this past Friday’s game between the Lowry High School varsity basketball team and Dayton you would see the final score at 53-10. Despite a 43-point win, the Lady Bucks were not completely happy with the outcome and are still looking to improve and hit their stride. “We are okay,” said LHS coach Jesse Zamudio. “It was a long week for us. We have some bumps and bruises and a lot of us didn’t feel the greatest.” A week after knocking down seven 3-pointers in a blow out win at Fallon, Lowry rarely took a long-distant shot against Dayton and didn’t have a 3-pointer on the night.
The Lowry High School wrestling team had to change some trave plans late last week. The Buckaroos were set to travel to Spring Creek for the Kiwanis Invitational, but it was canceled late in the week. Luckily, the Douglas Tigers were hosting an invitational as well, and the Buckaroos headed there Saturday. The trip paid off, as Angel Huerta won at 120 pounds and Lowry won the team title with 241.50 points. Douglas was second with 166 points and McQueen (147), Spanish Springs (129), Churchill County (84) and Battle Mountain (82.5) rounded out the top six.

In a season where every win is going to be an important one, the Lowry High School boys basketball team collected two victories this past weekend on its home floor. In a low-scoring game on Friday night, the Buckaroos got a free throw from Lance Brinegar with less than three seconds to play to break a 33-33 tie and give Lowry a 34-33 win, as Dayton couldn’t get off s good shot as time expired. “It was a wild night and we knew what kind of game we were going to get,” said LHS head coach Chad Peters. “The biggest thing we did was that we ran our stuff and didn’t get caught up in the other stuff. We stayed focus in what we needed to do and what they were doing. We ran that final play and we got a free throw from one of our best free throw shooters.”
While part of the Lowry High School wrestling team was in Idaho for the Rollie Lane Invitational, another group was in Sparks at the Brickhouse for the Sparks Invitational. The Buckaroos; David Hunter earned a runner-up finish at 138 pounds and Jorge Ochoa (113) and Billy DeLong (138) placed fourth. David Walker notched a fifth-place finish at 220 pounds and Gage Kinder (132) and Tayden Primeuax placed sixth at 145 pounds.
After getting an unexpected break in action due to weather and having the Sierra Nevada Classic canceled, a portion of the Lowry High School wrestling team was in Nampa, Idaho, this past weekend for the Rollie Lane Invitational. The Rollie Lane is one of the top wrestling tournaments in the Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Idaho area. Coda Nichols, wrestling at 98 pounds, turned in the best performance for the Buckaroos. Nichols usually wrestles at 106 pounds in Nevada, but Idaho has the smaller 98-pound class.
