McDermittt girls drop pair of league contests at home

After spending nearly the first two months of the season on the road, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team saw action on its home floor for the first time this season.

McDermitt hosted Wells on Thursday afternoon and the Leopards went back home with a 57-26 victory over the Lady Bulldogs.

Wells scored the first 18 points of the contest, when freshman Laeloni Tobey ended the run with a basket near the hoop with 1:15 left in the opening quarter. Sophomore Taylor Killsback added a basket shortly after that and the Leopards led 20-4 after eight minutes of play.

After Wells opened the second quarter with a basket, freshman Riata Palmer got on the scoreboard, but the Leopards netted the next 13 points to go in front 35-6.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the first half with the final four points, including an old-fashioned 3-point play from junior Cayla Crutcher. Tobey, Palmer and Crutcher added baskets in the third quarter for the Lady Bulldogs, but the Leopards were able to increase the lead to 50-18. Crutcher had nine points for the Lady Bulldogs, Tobey seven, Vina Tom and Palmer four each and Killsback two.

Lady Bulldogs fall to Vandals

McDermitt was back on its home floor on Friday night to take on Eureka. The Lady Bulldogs held a two-point lead at halftime but the Vandals pulled away in the second half for a 46-26 win.

Eureka held a slim 6-3 advantage in a low-scoring first quarter, when the Lady Bulldogs rallied with a 12-7 run to lead 15-13 at the break.

After scoring just 13 points in the first half, Eureka used a 16-7 run out of the break and did not trail again. The Vandals closed out the game on a 17-4 run.

McDermitt beats Owyhee

McDermitt traveled to Owyhee on Friday, Jan., 14, and came away with a 50-32 win, as the Braves played with just five players. Nicolette Northrup led all scorers with 18 points, as Crutcher joined her in double figures with 10. Tom and Killsback each scored eight points, Tobey had four and Palmer two points apiece. In addition, Palmer added nine rebounds, two steals and an assist.

Northrup and Tobey each grabbed 12 rebounds and Crutcher had 10 rebounds. Tom contributed six rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Carlin beats McDermitt

McDermitt rounded out the road trip in Carlin on Saturday, Jan. 15, and suffered a 38-27 loss to the Railroaders.

Crutcher had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Lady Bulldogs, while Northrup and Tom added seven and six points, respectively. Palmer, Killsback and Tobey each had two points.

The Lady Bulldogs sit at 4-8 overall and 1-3 in the Northern 1A East, as the second half of the league schedule gets going this week. McDermitt will be back home to play Owyhee and Carlin.
