The Lowry High School wrestling team had to change some trave plans late last week.
The Buckaroos were set to travel to Spring Creek for the Kiwanis Invitational, but it was canceled late in the week.
Luckily, the Douglas Tigers were hosting an invitational as well, and the Buckaroos headed there Saturday.
The trip paid off, as Angel Huerta won at 120 pounds and Lowry won the team title with 241.50 points.
Douglas was second with 166 points and McQueen (147), Spanish Springs (129), Churchill County (84) and Battle Mountain (82.5) rounded out the top six.
Huerta won all five of his matches by pin on his way to the 120-pound title in dominant form. His longest match of the tournament was in the first round, where he pined Sparks Kaiden Irwin, nearly 90 seconds into the second period.
The senior disposed Spanish Springs’ Kadrick Lewallen, Douglas’ Logan Boeckholt and Galena’s Caleb Sharron in the first period. Huerta needed just 61 seconds to pin Reno’s Akshay Mediwala for the title.
Marcus Ricci was the runner-up at 113 pounds, picking up two wins. After a first-round bye, Ricci pinned McQueen’s Bella Coronado in 22 seconds in the quarterfinals and Douglas’ Victor Valdez in the second period.
Ricci was knocked off in the title match by Battle Mountain’s Sean Scherer.
Baker placed second in the 126-pound weight class with wins by fall in the first period over Spanish Springs’ Landon Phillips and Yerington’s Travis Otto. Baker lost the first-place match to Douglas’ Elzie Morris.
Hawkins earned three wins on his way to a second-place finish at 145 pounds.
Hawkins pinned Alex Dominguez (McQueen), Quentin Hornbeak (Churchill County) and Jay Parsons (Dayton).
Fetty did the same at 152 pounds in his runner-up outing.
The junior won his first three matches by pin over Gino Ucelli (McQueen), Conner Main (North Valleys) and Troy Shelton (Churchill County). Fetty dropped his title bout to Dayton’s Colby Brunjes.
Hunter Smith was second at 195 pounds, beating Yerington’s Aiden Nelson by pin in 71 seconds the quarterfinals.
The senior had an opening-round bye. In one of the matches that went the distance, Smith earned a 5-2 decision over Sparks’ Jesse Chavez.
With just six wrestlers at 220 pounds, there was no bracket, but five rounds of wrestling. David Walker placed second for the Buckaroos.
The sophomore won his first four matches by pin over Battle Mountain’s Dalton Shake, McQueen’s Louis Ucelli, Douglas’ Benjamin Singer and Douglas’ Xavier Hamilton. Walker lost his fifth-round match to Spanish Springs’ Jacob Serverne.
The 285-pound class was done in a similar way, with rounds and Boni Jacinto was third. Jacinto won his first bout by pin and his second by DQ over McQueen’s Trey Smith.
The senior then pinned Yerington’s Floyd Thomas. In the championship bracket, Jacinto lost to Douglas’ Roan Zigenis. Jacinto dropped his last match to Douglas’ Michael White.
Coda Nichols was third at 106 pounds, as the sophomore won his first two matches by pin over Spanish Springs’ Levrett Simpson and Bishop Manogue’s Shane Cunningham.
Nichola lost in the semifinals to Douglas’ Luke Fournier, but bounced back to beat Simpson in the consolation semifinals and Yerington’s Eric Pineda in the third-place match.
Gage Kinder at 132 pounds and Jhett Harber at 160 pounds also placed third in the tournament.
After a first-round bye, Kinder beat Spanish Springs’ Kaleb Bozarth 19-3 to reach the semifinals.
Kinder dropped his semifinal bout to Pershing County’s Devin Moura, but won his final two matches to place third.
Harber advanced to the semifinals with wins by pin over Churchill County’s Xavier Capton and Dayton’s Diego Ibarra. Harber lost the semifinal bout to Chayton Johnson of North Valleys, but Harber came back to beat Capton and Ibarra for a second time to place third.
Billy DeLong at 138 pounds and Luke Fentress at 182 both placed fourth. Logan Ricci at 120 pounds, Jake Bauman (152) and Javier Gonzalez (160) picked up wins for the Buckaroos.
Lowry is scheduled to travel to Fernley this weekend for the Vaquero Invitational.
