McDermitt girls drop non-conference game to Pyramid Lake

After going four weeks without a game, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team returned to the floor on Tuesday, Jan. 4 at Pyramid Lake in a 1A non-conference match-up. The Lakers, who came into the game 11-3, including wins over 5A schools Spanish Springs, Reno and Reed, beat the Lady Bulldogs 60-43. McDermitt dropped to 3-5 on the season.

Bulldogs open league play with win at Jackpot

The McDermitt High School boys basketball team started the Northern 1A East season on a high note, with a 41-34 win at Jackpot on Friday afternoon. It was the first win over the Jaguars for the Bulldogs since the 2017 season. “It was a good way to start the league season,” said MHS coach Jack Smith. “It had been a while since we beat these guys. It was good for our confidence to make that long trip and to get a win.” 

Lady Bucks cruise to 42-point vicotry in Northern 3A East opener in Fallon

For the first time this year, the Lowry High School girls basketball team did not play a game in Las Vegas or Winnemucca. The Lady Bucks made the short trip to Fallon on Friday night to open play in the Northern 3A East and were not the most gracious visitors, beating Churchill County 60-18 to improve to 9-3 on the season and 1-0 in the Northern 3A East. Lowry found its shooting touch from the outside, knocking down seven 3-point field goals on the night, four girls scored in double figures, as the Lady Bucks shared the wealth throughout the lineup.

Lowry rally falls short at Fallon

The Lowry High School boys basketball found itself in an early hole in its Northern 3A East opener in Fallon on Friday night. Trailing by as many as 11 points in the first half to Churchill County, the Buckaroos rallied to tie the contest in the third quarter. However, the Greenwave pulled away in the final eight minutes to secure a 50-40 win. Lowry dropped to 7-6 on the season and 0-1 in the Northern 3A East.

Nevada men/women basketball games postponed

Due to COVID-19-related concerns within the Nevada women’s basketball program, the Wolf Pack’s games against Boise State on Thursday, Jan. 6, and at Air Force on Sunday, Jan. 9 were postponed. 

Area high school basketball games postponed

A handful of local high school basketball games were postponed. The Lowry High School JV and girls basketball teams were set to play in Truckee on Thursday but new Covid restrictions have Truckee schools on a pause.

Lowry state championship teams to be honored

This Saturday (Jan. 15) ,Lowry High School will recognize the 1992 boys basketball, girls basketball and wrestling state championship teams, the 2002 boys and girls basketball teams, and the 2012 boys basketball and wrestling teams, athletes and coaches.

Three to be inducted into Humboldt County High School/Lowry High School Hall of Fame

The Humboldt County High School/Lowry High School will induct three new members into its Hall of Fame on Saturday afternoon. The list includes Earl Cornforth, Dr. Alicia Echeverria Heiser and the 1958 Humboldt County High School football team that went undefeated.

Western Michigan cruises past Nevada

Kaleb Eleby threw two touchdowns and ran for another and Western Michigan recorded its second bowl victory in program history, rolling past Nevada 52-24 in the Quick Lane Bowl on Monday, Dec. 27. Sean Tyler rushed for 146 yards on 14 carries and returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown for Western Michigan (8-5). Jaxson Kincaide, a Nevada transfer, rushed for 105 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns.

Nevada pulls away in second half to beat New Mexico

Nevada rode a big second-half surge to a Mountain West-opening 79-70 victory over New Mexico Saturday night at Lawlor Events Center. The Wolf Pack (7-5, 1-0 MW) got double-doubles from three players Saturday.

After having two weeks with no games during the Christmas break, the McDermitt High School boys and girls basketball team returned to the floor on Tuesday.

Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno canceled due to weather

The Sierra Nevada Classic, one of the biggest wrestling tournaments in the state was canceled last week due to the winter storm that hit the area and closed US 50 and Interstate 80 for days.

Lowry boys pick up two wins at Rail City Classic in Sparks

It was a busy Christmas break for the Lowry High School boys basketball team with five games last week. The Buckaroos too part in the annual Rail City Classic and added another contest at Douglas High School, which was not part of the tournament. Lowry went to 2-3 in the five games and placed fifth in the Rail City Classic.

San Diego State knocks off UNLV

Matt Bradley had 17 points and seven rebounds and Keshad Johnson recorded 10 points and 11 rebounds to carry San Diego State to a 62-55 win over UNLV on Saturday in a Mountain West Conference opener. San Diego State (9-3, 1-0) earned its fourth consecutive victory. Chad Baker added 11 points. Nathan Mensah had 10 points, seven rebounds and four blocks.

Analysis: Expanded CFP gives more players reward worth risk

Turning more bowls into playoff games would give more players a worthy reward for risking millions in potential future earnings to participate in the postseason. Players opting out of bowl games became the underlying theme of New Year’s Day in college football, which was a shame because the games themselves were entertaining — even with some missing All-Americans.
