The Winnemucca junior golf season concluded last Wednesday with the Jeff Wade Memorial Tournament, as Landon Esquivel won with a round of 6-over par 78.
Winnemucca Regional Raceway featured two nights of action this past weekend with seven different classes of racing for fans that were looking to beat the heat as the sun went down. In addition, between the heat races and main events, there was timed UTV course racing that drivers competed on a separate course.
With the high school golf season coming up quickly, Katie Cassinelli prepped for that in style, as she won the Doc Verner Memorial junior golf tournament on Wednesday, July 20, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course with a round of 84.
Nevada offensive lineman Aaron Frost was named to the Outland Trophy Preseason Watch List, the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) announced recently. It marks Frost’s second preseason accolade in as many weeks. The fifth-year offensive lineman was named to the Preseason All-Mountain West Team.
Stephanie Crawford shot a low-gross score of 83 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club gross/net tournament held Tuesday, July 26 at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
Mountain West Football Media Days were held last week at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas with the conference announcing its 2022 predicted order of finish. Nevada was tabbed to finish fourth in the West Division, earning 66 points in voting done by media members that cover the conference’s 12 teams. Fresno State earned 20 of the 28 first-place votes for 160 points, to top the West, followed by San Diego State, which claimed the remaining eight first-place votes.
Melissa Murphy shot a low-net score of 71 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club pro’s Posse tournament held Tuesday, July 12, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
With temperatures over 100 degrees, the racing was just as hot this past weekend with a strong car count for the July Jamboree at the Good Times Drag Strip. Jim Naveran won the Jackpot race on Friday night and Mike Dodd was second. Don Mertens won the Saturday morning racing and Naveran was second. Sam Manner claimed the King of the Hill and Dodd was second.
Area junior high school and high school volleyball players had the opportunity to improve their skills with the Spike Frog Volleyball camp at Lowry High School last week. The camp was instructed by Josh Taylor from Utah, who has been with Spike Frog since 2009. The campers learned the various skills to improve their game as the new season approaches.
The Winnemucca junior golf season kicked off on Wednesday, July 13, with the Emelie Dillon scramble, as members of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club joined the youngsters.
The Winnemucca Junior All-Stars were on its home field for the District 3 Tournament that concluded on Monday at the Winnemucca Sports Complex. Seven other teams from northern Nevada made the trip for the five-day tournament. Winnemucca went 2-2, defeating Elko and Battle Mountain and losing to Silverada (Dayton) and White Pine.
The Winnemucca Events Complex was a busy place once again, as the 37th annual Silver State International Rodeo rolled into town for a week. Some of the best high school and junior high school rodeo athletes from around the West and Canada competed in a number events. The top-15 finals were held on Thursday, July 7.
Winnemucca Regional Raceway hosted two night of action on July 1-2 with six division of racing including IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, Sprint, Hobby Stocks, Pure Stock and Dwarf. Racing returns to the Jungo track on July 29-30 at 7 p.m.
