Separated by just a little over 50 miles, Lowry and Battle Mountain high schools have played just one football game since 2014, with that taking place in 2017. After a long break in the series, the two squads got back together this past Friday night in Winnemucca. The Buckaroos, with a game under their belt, a 34-14 win over Fernley, knocked off the Longhorns 51-21, who were making their season debut with a new coach in Tucker Vezina.
The Lowry High School cross country team made its way to western Nevada this past Friday to open the season at the Douglas Class Races in Minden. The racers are divided up into freshman, sophomore, junior and senior races at a distance of 2.55 miles.
A season ago the Lowry High School football team beat two 5A opponents in Douglas and Galena and finished the season 6-3. However, those three losses came in Northern 3A East play and the Buckaroos were left out of the playoffs.

We Ustacould won the 2022 Winners Inn Shootout bowling tournament held Aug. 6-7 at Spare Time Bowl in Winnemucca. The Winners Inn and Winnemucca Inn helped sponsor the tournament of 90 players, including 80 of them from out of town. Over $13,000 in prize money was awarded as 30 teams competed.
Bryn Echevarria shot a low-gross core of 69 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club Pro’s Posse tournament held Tuesday, Aug. 9, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course. Melissa Murphy was second in the first flight at 71.
With summer coming to an end, despite the temperatures saying something different, the start of the school year is just around the corner and high school athletes are hitting the field and court this weekend.
High school football teams took to the field last week and now all the other fall sports (cheer, dance, volleyball, boys and girls soccer, girls golf and cross country) are under way as well. The Battle Mountain High School football team will host a scrimmage on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m.
Two-time All-Mountain West defensive tackle Dom Peterson was named to the preseason watch list of the Chuck Bednarik Award. The Bednarik Award has been awarded to the College Player of the Year since 1994.
Each year the Winnemucca Men’s Golf Club awards Lowry seniors that are members of the girls and boys golf team scholarships. This past spring the Men’s Club gave three $750 scholarships to Bailey Hayes, Cal Peters and Seamus Maloon.
