Ladies golf results —

The Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club held its Nassau tournament on Tuesday, July 5, at Winnemucca Golf Course. Marlea Pointer had the best front nine at 34 in the first flight and Stephanie Crawford was tops on the back nine with a score of 36. Lisa Carlson had the best 18 score at 70.

Second annual Eastern Oregon Up From the Mucc camp draws large numbers

The Winnemucca Event Center was a busy place from June 20-22, as nearly 100 kids came out for the second annual Eastern Oregon Up From the Mucc wrestling camp, with aid of Lowry and Eastern Oregon graduate Jace Billingsley. Eastern Oregon coach Dustyn Azure and his staff, along with Eastern Oregon wrestlers were on hand to give wrestlers help and tips during the three-day camp. A number of wrestlers and teams came from out of town to participate.  

Winnemucca to host junior all-stars District 3 Tournament

The final District 3 Little League tournament of the summer gets under way on Thursday, July 7, as Winnemucca hosts the junior tournament at the Winnemucca Sports Complex.

Humboldt General Hospital to provide free sports physicals

Is your child a student-athlete, involved in community sports, or a scouting youth?  Huboldt General Hospital is offering Sports Physicals on Saturday, July 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Humboldt General Hospital’s main entrance.  Providers will be conducting the physicals, along with their support staff. Parents and guardians must be present, and there is no appointment necessary.  For any coffee needs, our coffee cart will be open to the public in the morning from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. 

Latest Vegas sports arena and resort ready for possible NBA expansion

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver attempted to pump the brakes on expansion talk earlier this month, telling reporters the league isn’t considering adding franchises over the next few years. That didn’t stop basketball star LeBron James and boxing great Floyd Mayweather from separately indicating their interests in owning an NBA expansion team in Las Vegas. Marc Badain said he hasn’t spoken “personally” to either James or Mayweather. But he understands their curiosity and why he might eventually receive a phone call.

Vicki Celio shot a low-gross score of 39 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club Blind Hole tournament held Tuesday, June 28, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.

Kuskie becomes first Lowry athlete to win state championships in three sports in same year

To win a high school state championship in a sport is a special moment for that student/athlete. Since changing from Humboldt County High School to Lowry High School over 50 years ago, there have been many individual and team state champions that have graced the halls in the Winnemucca school.

Winnemucca 8-10-year-old all stars play in Battle Mountain

The Winnemucca 8-10-year-old all stars traveled to Battle Mountain for the 2022 District 3 all-star tournament. Nine teams from northern Nevada competed for six days with the opportunity to advance to the state tournament in Las Vegas from July 20-24. Winnemucca beat High Desert 15-8 on Friday night and lost 14-4 to Silverada on Sunday night. Winnemucca played Ruby Mountain on Monday morning and results were not available at press time.  

Lowry volleyball camp brings over 50 girls over four days

Over 50 girls turned out for the Lowry volleyball camp last week, under the direction of Lowry coaches and players. Campers learned the fundamentals of the game as well as having fun with some games.

Gail Piquet shot a low-gross score of 42 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club Better Nine tournament golf Tuesday, June 21, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.

Winnemucca/Battle Mountain all-stars head to Yerington

The Little League all-star baseball tournaments continue, as the 10-12-year-old all-stars travel to Yerington for the District 3 tournament to be played at Buck Aiazzi Field.

Jumpin’ June Drags hits Good Times Drag Strip

Despite some unseasonable cool weather for June, the Good Times Drag Strip was a busy place on June 17 and 18 for the Jumpin’ June Drags. The two days of action saw racers compete in the Pro and Street/Sportsman divisions. Don Mertens took home first place and Jeff Lundy was second.  

Byrd finishes sixth in pole bending at National Junior High Finals Rodeo

Humboldt County’s Huntley Byrd finished sixth in the final standings of pole bending at the National Junior High Finals Rodeo that concluded Saturday night in Perry, Georgia. There were 165 competitors in pole bending.
