The final games of the regular season for the 11-12 year-old Winnemucca Little League teams were held last Saturday. The Cubs and the Rockies took on the Angels from Battle Mountain to close out the year.
The Ladies Golf Club held the Ace of Aces Golf Tournament at the Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday. . In the first flight Gail Piquet shot a 96 to win the low gross title.
The Panthers, Mustangs, Eagles and Gaels all won 2019 One Nevada Cup titles awarded by the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA). Pahranagat Valley (Class 1A), The Meadows (2A), Boulder City (3A) and Bishop Gorman (4A) are the NIAA’s One Nevada Cup champions for the 2018-19 school year.
The Nevada State High School Finals Rodeo was held in Las Vegas for junior high on May 24-25 and high schools competed May 26-28. Battle Mountain was the only local team to bring back first place finishes, but Lovelock and Humboldt County also qualified cowboys and/or cowgirls to compete in the National Finals. The top four finishers in each event at state go on to the National Finals in Wyoming, while places 5-15 will go to the Silver State International Rodeo (SSIR) in Winnemucca.
The 3rd Annual High Desert Classic Shootout was held last weekend at the Winnemucca Regional Raceway (WRR) on Jungo Road. It was supposed to be a two day event on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon, but Mother Nature had other plans. Just as the drivers made their way onto the track on Saturday, the skies opened up and rain made the track un-drivable. All of Saturday’s events were run on Sunday morning, and Sunday afternoon’s events went off without a hitch, making for a stock car racing marathon.
The Winnemucca Motocross Club hosted the sixth and final race of the Battleborn MX Series last weekend at the Winnemucca Regional Raceway on Jungo Road. Almost 100 riders participated for the chance to win cash and bragging rights. Eight-year old Gaven Giomi from Gardnerville raced in the event.
The annual World Series of Poker opened Tuesday in Las Vegas with dozens of scheduled card tournaments and a special event to celebrate the 50th run of a series known for minting millionaires each year. The seven-week poker festival is expected to again draw tens of thousands of players seeking a piece of a projected combined prize pool of more than $200 million. Buy-ins for the series' 89 championship events range from $400 to $100,000.
The Ladies Golf Club held the Spring Golf Tournament at the Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday, May 14 and Tuesday May 28. Terri Kracaw was the overall winner with a 136.
The Badgers 14U baseball team finished second at the Treasure Valley Kickoff Tournament in Meridian, Idaho. In pool play on Saturday, May 25, the Badgers lost 11-0 to the La Grande Slam and 16-1 to NW Advantage (an 18U team). In pool play on Sunday, May 26, the Badgers beat the Boise Beasts 4-1. In bracket play, the Badgers beat Boise 10-2 and lost to La Grande 3-1.
The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association’s Realignment Committee met on Friday, May 24, to discuss possible changes for the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. The biggest topic of the day was the adoption of a recommendation regarding Northern schools currently aligned in the 3A and 4A classifications being re-worked to establish a new 5A division.
Beyond Revs Pro Shop from Salt Lake City, won the 2019 Bad Boys Tournament held May 17-19 at Spare Time Bowl in Winnemucca. The Winnemucca Inn provided $2,800 in prize money and Winners Inn contributed $1,000. Over 100 bowlers, with 94 of them from out of town, including California, Utah and Idaho. A total of $13,000 in prize money was awarded.
The Lowry High School football squad held the maximum number of practices allowed by the NIAA last week, but Mother Nature bared her teeth repeatedly to challenge the Bucks efforts.
The NIAA awards for last season were handed out last week for the 3A North and the state, as well as the most valuable player and coach of the year. Lowry’s Ridge Ricketts was the only Buckaroo nominated, getting a second-team nod from the leagues coaches. Ricketts batted .432 with three home runs, 22 RBI’s, and he stole 14 bases.
Lowry High School senior Caleb Sanchez will be attending Presentation College in Aberdeen, South Dakota next year on athletic and academic scholarships.
