The Northern 3A and all-state awards for the 2019 softball season, selected by the league's coaches have been announced. Lowry's Sydney Connors was awarded the Northern 3A Most Valuable Player award. The senior was also named to the all-state, first team. This season, Connors hit .581 with 10 home runs and 66 RBIs, in addition to adding 18 stolen bases to lead the Lady Bucks. Lowry senior Madi McClellan and junior Sierra Maestrejuan were named to the Northern 3A first team. Junior Kelcey Cooper and sophomore Mackenzie Salas-Begay were voted to the second team.
Lowry High School senior Becca Kuskie has received both academic and athletic scholarships to attend Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Ore. for the 2019-2020 year. On Tuesday, she signed her letter of intent with family, friends and faculty present. "I got in contact with one of the admissions counselors who happens to be one of their cross country coaches and she started recruiting me," Kuskie said. "After careful consideration I decided that was the best place for me to go, especially because my sister (Alyssa) will be there next year with me. I have made friends with some of her teammates on the basketball team already. I am thinking about majoring in Psychology with a minor in Spanish.” Back in October, Kuskie took fourth (20:42) at the 3A Northern Cross Country Regional Championships, and she was 17th at the NIAA State Championships last November.
The Lowry High School swim team went to the NIAA 3A State Championships at Carson City last weekend to compete against the best of the best in the state of Nevada.
You never know what your going to get when you get into the postseason, especially the state tournament. The Lowry High School softball team and rival Fernley, provided something fans were not expecting — a low scoring contest from two of the highest scoring teams in the league in an elimination game on Friday night at the NIAA State Championships in Mesquite. The two schools combined for nearly 500 runs this year, but a pitchers duel broke out in a 1-0 final. Unfortunately, for the Lady Bucks they were on the wrong side of the scoreboard. The Vaqueros scored the lone run of the night in the sixth inning and held off a Lady Buckaroo rally in the seventh to end Lowry’s season a game short of the state championship.
The Lowry High School track and field team made the long trip to Las Vegas and Desert Oasis High School, this past weekend for the NIAA State Championships. Rachel Garrison turned in the best finish on the girls side, with two third-place finishes. The senior had a throw of 34 feet, 7.7-50 inches in the shot put and 116-2 in the discus.
Riding the momentum of one of its most successful seasons in recent memory, the McDermitt High School boys track and field team made its way down to Las Vegas and Desert Oasis High School this past weekend for the NIAA State Championships. “We had a pretty good year,” said MHS coach Richard Egan. “It was quite surprising for myself, the kids and other coaches. Other coaches spoke highly of us and I told the kids not to drop their heads if they had a bad day. We had a successful season. We came a long way from not even having a team last year.”
The Lowry High School baseball team went to Truckee on May 4-5 to close out its season. The league leaders and regional champions, beat the Buckaroos in all three games in the Sierra Nevada Mountains Lowry managed to score a few runs in their 10-3 loss to the Wolverines on Friday, May 4. However, on Saturday. May 5, Lowry lost the last two games 10-0 and 15-0 to finish the season with a 10-17 league record.
The Lowry High School golf team qualified for the NIAA 3A State Tournament in Genoa Lakes that was held May 13-14, but they took the final spot in their last match of the year.
Twenty Three baseball teams from Fernley, Fallon, Yerington, Lovelock, Elko, Spring Creek, Dayton and Winnemucca battled it out last weekend on five different parks across our town.
The Fitness Zone Gym from Winnemucca took competitors to Reno for a combination power-lifting/body-building competition last month. Mark Andrews has been a personal trainer for the Fitness Zone for over 20 years. “In the last competition, I went with three of my clients for the body-building show," Andrews said.. "I have been competing since 2014, and I have done seven body-building shows since then. I placed first in the Masters 50-Plus at the last event, and as an older competitor you can move down and compete against the younger guys. I did, and I took 4th out of eight in the 40-Plus also.”
Colby Terry cleared 12 feet and Rachel Garrison tossed the discus 114 feet, 7 inches to secure the top spots in the pole vault and discus events at Churchill County (Fallon) High School last weekend and they are looking forward to a spot at the state championships on Friday and Saturday Garrison also finished second in the shot put (32-7) and Heather Hall (31-9.25) was third. The top four finishers in each event at regionals go on to compete at state.
The McDermitt High School track and field team traveled to Fallon and Churchill County High School this past weekend for the Northern 1A Rergional Championships. After a number of strong performances, the Bulldogs will be sending several athletes off to the state championships as a result. Junior Ben Draunidalo won the 100 meters in 11.40 seconds, and he also took the 200 meters with a personal record time of 23.83 seconds. “We started out really well on the first day of this meet," said MHS coach Richard Egan. "We have some kids who have really shined, but overall as a team everybody stepped up and did well.”
It wasn’t easy at times but the Lowry High School softball team punched its ticket to the state championships for the second consecutive season this past weekend at the Northern 3A Regioanl Championships weekend in Elko. In a win-or-go-home game on Saturday morning, Lowry built a 5-0 lead after an inning against Dayton, only to see the Dust Devils roar back to go in front 8-6 in the fourth inning.
The Lowry High School swim team began its postseason this past weekend in Carson City to compete in the Northern 3A Regional Championships for a chance to go to the state championship meet in Carson again the following week. The top four qualifiers in each event return to Carson on Saturday to compete against the rest of the state. "I am impressed that we had 10 swimmers make it to the finals on Saturday and everybody dropped or maintained their times," said LHS coach Shelby Ruff. "It is always great to see records continue to drop. In swimming you are really just racing against the clock.” Matthew Lizanetz, Ashton Kalkoske, Tristan Miller and Aidan Maher (4 minutes, 5.47 seconds) teamed up for a third-place finish to punch their ticket to state in the 400 meters freestyle.
The Lowry High School swim team went to the Northwest Pool in Reno last weekend and the boys took down both of its opponents, while the girls managed to split at the meet. The boys dispatched Sparks 110-57 and North Tahoe 103-58, and the girls were victorious over Sparks 38-14, but they fell to North Tahoe 151-32. “This weekend was a mixed bag in terms of results," said LHS coach Shelby Ruff. "Toward the end of the season it’s harder to make big time drops simply because you’re back in peak condition and have to push beyond your previous limits. The team did a good job moving forward with everyone maintaining or improving on personal bests.”
