The Lowry High School track and field team traveled to Sparks this past weekend for one of the top meets in northern Nevada, in the Reed Rotary Invitational at Sparks High School.
The Lowry High School softball team closed crossover play with the Northern 3A West with a pair of 15-0 victories this past weekend on its home field.
Predictions can be dangerous. But the one Jordan McKinney made at the end of last softball season is coming true. This past Saturday the Mustangs softball team hosted the Silver Stage Nighthawks for the last two games of a tripleheader. It started in Silver Springs on Tuesday and came home on Saturday.
Pershing County baseball scored its first win of the season on Saturday (6-5). It was the last of a 3-game series against the Silver Stage Nighthawks. The week started on Tuesday with a 12-2 loss in Silver Springs. On Saturday, the Mustangs and Nighthawks played for a Lovelock crowd. The Mustangs lost the first game 16-1.
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski refused to let his players ponder the possibility of facing North Carolina for the first time in the NCAA Tournament after the Blue Devils had punched their Final Four ticket with a win over Arkansas. They have no choice but to think about it now.
Winning by now should be old hat for Scottie Scheffler. Sunday in the Dell Technologies Match Play was special for so many reasons, and the new No. 1 player in the world couldn’t hide it. Moments after Scheffler closed out Kevin Kisner on the 15th hole to win for the third time in five starts, the 25-year-old Texan was overcome by tears and hugs, from his wife to his parents and sisters and pretty much everyone who could get a piece of him at Austin Country Club. From a top junior in Dallas to four years as a Texas Longhorn to his time outside the ropes at the Match Play watching the world’s best, all Scheffler wanted to do was play alongside them.
Standing at the top of the ladder, Lexie Hull got the final snip with the scissors, drawing one of the loudest cheers of the night as she draped the net around her neck. Hull did all she could to get defending national champion Stanford back to her hometown for the Spokane Regional. Then, she became the catalyst for getting the Cardinal back to the women’s Final Four.
The Battle Mountain High School boys golf team traveled to Elko this past Thursday for the second tournament of the season. The Longhorns improved by 56 strokes from the first week to shoot 401 and finish third at Ruby View Golf Course,
After attending College of Southern Idaho's winter softball clinic in December, the Battle Mountain High School softball team was invited to go to one of their home games. This opportunity came this weekend. Eight girls, two coaches and their families met at the First Federal Field on the CSI campus to watch some higher level softball play and enjoyed the beautiful weather. A huge thank you goes out to Coach Nick Baumert, his coaches and the CSI Golden Eagles. Battle Mountain is scheduled to host Incline this weekend.
The Battle Mountain High School track and field team made its way to western Nevada this past Thursday for the Laker Invitational at Pyramid Lake High School.
The Lowry High School boys golf team got its season started last week with a pair of tournaments in Lyon County. The Buckaroos traveled to Dayton and Dayton Valley Country Club on Monday, March 14, and placed sixth in the first league tournament of the season.
The Lowry High School swim team was in Carson City on Saturday, March 12, for the Aqua 5 meet. In the Aqua 5, swimmers compete in the 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly, 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke. The swimmer with the best combined time in the five events is the winner.
McDermitt High School junior Cayla Crutcher won the shot put at the Mark Smith “Smitty” Track and Field Classic on Saturday at Wooster High School in Reno. Crutcher had a throw of 28 feet, 10.25 inches to win the event to beat out Truckee’s Ashley Estabrook at 28-7.75. Crutcher was third in the discus with a toss of 79-7, a personal record.
The Lowry High School softball team got a possible look at what the best of the Northern 3A West had to offer when it made its home debut this past Friday against North Valleys. The Lady Bucks opened crossover play the week before with a pair of 17-0 wins over Wooster and Sparks, but the Panthers would be a much tougher foe.
Lowry High School senior Jovi Kuskie grabbed three first-place finishes at the Fallon Elks Invitational this past Saturday at Churchill County High School in Fallon. Kuskie set a personal best in the 800 meters to win with a time of 2 minutes, 3.21 seconds. She set another personal best in the 3,200 meters at 12:37.40 and was first in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:39.85, her quickest time of the year in the event. Hannah Whitted claimed the top spot in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet, 2 inches, while teammate McKenzi Petersen was ninth with a mark of 4-8.
