Kuskie wins three events at Fallon Elks Invitational

Lowry High School senior Jovi Kuskie grabbed three first-place finishes at the Fallon Elks Invitational this past Saturday at Churchill County High School in Fallon.

Kuskie set a personal best in the 800 meters to win with a time of 2 minutes, 3.21 seconds. She set another personal best in the 3,200 meters at 12:37.40 and was first in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:39.85, her quickest time of the year in the event.

Hannah Whitted claimed the top spot in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet, 2 inches, while teammate McKenzi Petersen was ninth with a mark of 4-8.

Emily Backus earned a runner-up finish in the long jump with a leap of 15-9.50 and the senior was ninth in the triple jump with a personal-best leap of 29-3.50. 

Backus was fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.32, while teammates Elizabeth Aguilar (13.49) and Sydnee Pettis (13.64) set personal bests to finish fifth and seventh in the 100-meter dash. In addition, Pettis was 11th in the long jump, setting a personal best at 14-4.50.

Mia Hernandez cleared the bar at 8-0 to finish sixth in the pole vault and the junior was 10th in the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 29.36. Saree Millikan posted top 20 finishes in the shot put (26-3.50) and discus (63-9).

The 4x100 relay of Backus, Ellanora Petersen, Pettis and Elizabeth Aguilar were third with a time of 52.57.

Douglas won a close team fight over Carson 93.5-92, while Churchill County (73.5) was third. Fernley (69.5) and Lowry (67) rounded out the top five.

On the boys side, Giovani Sapien finished the day with two runner-up finishes, including a personal-best time of 11.58 in the 100-meter dash. He lost to the winner by just .04 seconds. Sapien set another personal best in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-10. In addition, the senior was 10th in the long, with another personal best at 18-4.50.

Tyson Terry set a personal best in the discus to place fourth with a throw of 110-2 and the junior placed eighth in the shot put with a toss of 38-2.50.

Scot Brown (11-0), Kaid Sanchez (11-0) and Shaun Gilliland (10-6) were third, fourth and seventh, respectively, in the pole vault. Brown and Sanchez set personal bests.

Iysis Arriola jumped a personal best 19-4.25 to place sixth in the long jump, while teammate Gunner Bradley was seventh in the high jump with a mark of 5-10. Deven Gomez set a personal best in the 110-meter hurdles to place eight and Ivan Lara ran a personal best in the 3,200 meters to finish eighth in a time of 5:10.73. Cody Long was 12th in the shot with a throw of 37-6 for a personal best and Nicolas Jung set a personal best in the discus with a toss of 96.

Reed won the boys team championship with 128.5 points. Carson was second with 96.5 points and Douglas (91) placed third. Lowry was seventh with 41.5 points. Lowry travels to Sparks this weekend for the Reed Invitational.
