High Desert Youth bowling —

The High Desert Youth Bowling League held its City championship tournament recently with over 30 bowlers. The league started just after Labor Day and be on the outlook for summer league’s for the youngsters.   

High School Rodeo Association takes place in Las Vegas, Fernley

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association was back in action with rodeos in Las Vegas (March 11-13) and back in northern Nevada in Fernley (March 18-20). In Las Vegas, Humboldt County’s Emma Garijo was second in the barrel racing wo-day average with a time of 33.621. She was second in the first performance in a time of 16.740 and third in the second performance at 16.881.

Lowry rallies to win two of three from Elko

After reeling off eight impressive wins in a row, the Lowry High School softball team was handed a one-run loss in extra innings to open Northern 3A East play in Elko this past weekend. The Indians grabbed a 4-0 lead on Friday afternoon, when the Lady Bucks rallied for four runs in the seventh. Elko went on to the 5-4 win, scoring in the bottom of the eighth.

Buckaroos open Northern 3A East with two wins at Elko

The Lowry High School began Northern 3A East play on a high, winning two of three games from Elko this past weekend on the Indians’ home field. The Buckaroos won the opener 10-5 on Friday afternoon and split a doubleheader on Saturday, losing game one 12-6 and winning the finale 7-3.  The Buckaroos improved to 5-8 overall and 2-1 in the Northern 3A East.

Pershing County track and field sent eight athletes to the Battle Mountain Invitational this past Friday, Apr. 1. Results were not available at press time but Matt and Cassidie Fuller remain pleased with the team’s progress.

PCHS baseball drops three games to West Wendover

The team may stumble, but teammates improve, moment by moment. Pershing County  baseball hosted the West Wendover Wolverines for a tripleheader this past weekend.

Many factors have contributed to the Pershing County High Scholl softball team’s 11-game winning streak. For example, it’s hard to lose when you’ve got a ‘vacuum on third base.’ 

Joel Bitonio, Austin Corbett and Home Means Nevada, Co., to host Youth Football Camp

Nevada football alumni and NFL stars, Joel Bitonio and Austin Corbett in collaboration with presenting sponsor, Home Means Nevada, Co., will be hosting a free football camp for kids between 3rd-8th grade from 2-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23 at Mackay Stadium. Attendees will run through drills, play mini games, and learn fundamental football techniques.

Battle Mountain golfers finish second on home course

The Battle Mountain High School boys golf team enjoyed the home cooking of its home course to place second on Wednesday, March 30. Seven other teams from around Nevada visited Mountain View Golf Course, where the weather was ideal.

Battle Mountain baseball picks up five wins over Carlin, Incline

The Battle Mountain High School baseball team was busy last week with five games and the Longhorns came out on top in all five contests. The Longhorns stepped out of league play on Tuesday, March 29, and swept Carlin in a doubleheader in Carlin.  Battle Mountain won game one 22-4 and the nightcap 16-0, which included a perfect game from Marcos Jimenez. In the opener against Carlin, Battle Mountain led 15- after the top of the third inning after scoring nine runs in the second inning and five more in the third.

Lady Longhorns win three of four games against Carlin, Wells

The first month of the season for the Battle Mountain High School softball team has been an odd one to say the least. The Lady Longhorns opened the season in the first week of March at the Pershing County tournament in Lovelock. Battle Mountain got one day of play in, before bad weather wiped out the final day of play. After a week off in the schedule, Battle Mountain was set to take on Silver Stage in a three-game series on its home field to begin Northern 2A action. The Nighthawks decided to forfeit and not make the trip. The Lady Longhorns was supposed to be back in Battle Mountain this past weekend to play Incline for three games. The Highlanders informed the Lady Longhorns that they would not make the trip out to the east side of the state.

Lowry drops home games to Truckee, South Tahoe

The last time the Lowry High School baseball team saw Truckee and South Tahoe it was the 2019 season.  The 2020 season was canceled to the Covid outbreak and in 2021 teams played a partial schedule within their own division. After two years, Lowry had the opportunity play the California schools at home this past weekend. Truckee visited Winnemucca on Friday and left with an 8-2 win and South Tahoe picked up a 10-4 win on Saturday afternoon. 

Pershing County track team shines at Laker Invitational

A dozen track teams and hundreds of athletes met at Pyramid Lake High School last Thursday. Pershing County sent 10 competitors. They enjoyed milder weather than the first couple of meets where the cold and wind added obstacles. “The weather was fantastic,” said coach Matt Fuller.

McDermitt track and field team competes at Laker Invitational

The McDermitt High School track and field team made its way back to the west side of Nevada last Thursday with the Laker Invitational at Pyramid Lake High School. McDermitt junior Cayla Crutcher continued her hot streak in the shot put, winning the event with a throw of 28 feet, 4.50 inches. She placed fifth in the discus with a toss of 74-1.

Ladies Golf Club results —

The Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club held its first tournament of the year on Tuesday, March 22, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
