The Pershing County volleyball team played two close games this past week. On Friday, they lost to Incline on the road 21-25, 22-25, 25-18, 26-24, 9-15.
The varsity boys had the week off but Pershing’s JV football team represented Lovelock with skill and finesse. The JV team hosted the Coral Academy Falcons on Thursday, Oct. 7. The Mustangs beat the Falcons with a final score of 46-6. “The kids played their hearts out and it showed on the scoreboard,” said coach Jared Jensen. “Travis Donaldson (#1) had a remarkable game. Offensively, we had lots of good performances. Our whole line played well.”
The Pershing County soccer team delivered two energetic home games this week. On Friday afternoon the Mustangs beat the West Wendover Wolverines with a final score of 4-3. Saturday morning, they lost to White Pine (2-0).
We learn a lot from loss but it feels good to win. Just ask the Pershing County girls soccer team. The Mustangs defeated the visiting Battle Mountain Longhorns last Tuesday (Sept. 28) with a final score of 9-1. It was the Mustangs’ first win of the season and it fell during homecoming week. “Overall, the ladies played a great game. They moved the ball and communicated all game,” said coach Matt Fuller. “I’m proud of how they played and came together as a team.”
The PCHS volleyball team hosted the Coral Academy Falcons last Wednesday. It was the Mustang’s homecoming game. “The energy in the gym was rocking,” said coach Monica Halverson. “Our fans cheered as we played.” The student section filled up with cheerleaders and athletes from the other sports teams. It was a good week to be a Mustang with wins for the football, volleyball and soccer teams. They all support one another.
This past Friday the Pershing County Mustangs football team hosted the North Tahoe Lakers. It looked a bit shaky at first, but the Mustangs seized the league win 38-7, their third this season. “The game was tough in the first half,” acknowledged coach Mike Brooks. “We weren’t sure what to expect from North Tahoe because we had limited game film and we didn’t get to see them play last year due to Covid restrictions.”
Carson Strong threw for 263 yards and a touchdown, Toa Taua rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns and Nevada defeated Boise State 41-31 on Saturday. Nevada (4-1, 1-0), the pre-season favorite to win the Mountain West Conference's West division, snapped a six-game losing streak to the Broncos, dating back to 2010. Nevada last won in Boise in 1997. While Nevada coach Jay Norvell was all smiles after the game, he didn't seem surprised at the result. He was more ecstatic about the way his team won rather than breaking a long losing streak.
The JV and varsity Pershing County Mustang football teams traveled to Lyon County on Friday, Sept. 24. The varsity team lost 36-3 to the Yerington Lions. Pershing County’s three points came from a first-quarter field goal by Diego Gonzalez. According to PCHS coach Mike Brooks, Izayuh McGlothin had a good game as a freshman playing varsity. Junior running back Noel Zaldivar also played well, he added.
The Pershing County soccer team traveled to Reno to compete with the Sage Ridge Scorpions last Friday, Sept. 24. The Scorpions beat the Mustangs 9-1.
It was a successful week for Pershing County volleyball. On Wednesday, they traveled to Longhorn country to beat rival school Battle Mountain in five sets 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 19-25, 16-14. In West Wendover, on Friday, they defeated the Wolverines in three sets 25-19, 25-18, 25-15.
Last Friday night began with a disappointment but ended with a win for the Pershing County Mustangs football team. The varsity boys expected to host the Silver Stage Nighthawks but plans changed at the last minute.
The Pershing County High School girls soccer team hosted the Incline Highlanders on Saturday morning at Yanni Field and lost 8-0. “Today was a tough one,” said coach Matt Fuller. “We have 18 ladies, but a few were out today and we have a few out for injuries.”
The Pershing County volleyball team beat North Tahoe on the road after losing to Yerington and Incline at home. The week started at PCHS on Wednesday with a loss to the Yerington in three sets, 25-20, 25-12, 25-14. On Friday, the girls were back on their home court for a close contest against the Incline Highlanders. The Mustangs won the first two sets but lost the last three (25-18, 25-17, 17-25, 20-25, 11-15).
Will Howard pushed into the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run to cap a 21-point fourth quarter, which sealed a 38-17 victory for Kansas State over Nevada on Saturday.
