The Pershing County soccer team traveled to Reno to compete with the Sage Ridge Scorpions last Friday, Sept. 24. The Scorpions beat the Mustangs 9-1.
It was a successful week for Pershing County volleyball. On Wednesday, they traveled to Longhorn country to beat rival school Battle Mountain in five sets 25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 19-25, 16-14. In West Wendover, on Friday, they defeated the Wolverines in three sets 25-19, 25-18, 25-15.
Last Friday night began with a disappointment but ended with a win for the Pershing County Mustangs football team. The varsity boys expected to host the Silver Stage Nighthawks but plans changed at the last minute.
The Pershing County High School girls soccer team hosted the Incline Highlanders on Saturday morning at Yanni Field and lost 8-0. “Today was a tough one,” said coach Matt Fuller. “We have 18 ladies, but a few were out today and we have a few out for injuries.”
The Pershing County volleyball team beat North Tahoe on the road after losing to Yerington and Incline at home. The week started at PCHS on Wednesday with a loss to the Yerington in three sets, 25-20, 25-12, 25-14. On Friday, the girls were back on their home court for a close contest against the Incline Highlanders. The Mustangs won the first two sets but lost the last three (25-18, 25-17, 17-25, 20-25, 11-15).
Will Howard pushed into the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run to cap a 21-point fourth quarter, which sealed a 38-17 victory for Kansas State over Nevada on Saturday.

Round seven of the Battle Born Motocross series hit the Winnemucca Moto track this past weekend with over 400 riders from around the area. Riders competed in the 250/450 Pro, 250/450 Intermediate, 250/450 Junior, 250/450 Beginner, All vets and women, 50 cc, 65cc, 85cc and Super mini.
Nevada head coach Linda Garza announced Marina Demore has been hired as an assistant coach. “Coach Marina Demore comes with national team and high-caliber playing experience,” Garza said in a news release. “ Coach D has familiarity with the Mountain West, experience integrating technology, alongside the day-to-day work progression of bullpen planning.” A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Demore joins Garza’s staff after spending a season at Northern Kentucky University serving as a pitching coach.

Carson Strong threw for 381 yards and four touchdowns, and Nevada beat Idaho State 49-10 on Saturday night. Strong completed 34 of 43 passes that included two touchdowns to Elijah Cooks, who finished with seven receptions for 89 yards.

In the aftermath of a surprisingly competitive 37-10 victory over UNLV on Saturday night, the 23rd-ranked Sun Devils chose to focus on the latter. “Eventually, our guys came together,” Arizona State coach Herm Edwards said. “In the third quarter, that’s when we got going.” Quarterback Jayden Daniels ran for a career-high 122 yards and Rachaad White added two rushing touchdowns.
