The Pershing County volleyball team played two close games this past week. On Friday, they lost to Incline on the road 21-25, 22-25, 25-18, 26-24, 9-15.
The Highlanders are the top-ranked team in the 2A. On Saturday, the Mustangs hosted the North Tahoe Lakers.
Pershing County won the game in five sets 21-25, 22-25, 25-18, 26-24, 9-15.
The spectators were in a constant state of tension in both high school gyms all weekend. The scores were tied more often than not.
A team would come up from behind, tie the score and fall behind again. For the players, it was war.
“I had no idea volleyball could be so exciting,” remarked a spectator as she left Saturday’s game.

“We battled back and forth and lost the first two sets against Incline,” said Halverson. “By the third set my team turned it up and played better. Communication was a factor and improved throughout the game. We were utilizing our hitters better by passing and serving better.”
Even so, Pershing County came up short.
“Incline has a tall and talented middle player that can hit the gallery quickly off of short sets. Some we picked up but most of the hits succeeded, resulting in a lot of defensive errors.”
The Highlanders seized the win.
Mustangs drain
the Lakers
According to the coach, Pershing lost the first two sets against North Tahoe because of fundamental mistakes.
“The Lakers had some nice serves that my players could not pick up,” she explained.
However, after a time-out, the coach noticed an attitude change among the Mustangs.
“The girls finally showed up in the third set and played well,” she said. “Presley Burrows was on fire and had a game high of 20 kills.”
Burrows also added 13 digs and multiple touches to contribute to the Mustang win.
Aledda Sam was on the sidelines, directing and cheering for her team. Sadly, she tore her ACL and meniscus during a home game against Yerington last month.
“Not having Aledda on the court as a leader and left hitter has had a huge impact on the way my team plays. Everyone needs an Aledda on their team,” said the coach.
The Pershing County JV squad had only one match this weekend because Incline did not have enough players. The JV girls lost to North Tahoe (26-24, 22-25, 11-15).
Upcoming games
On Friday, the Mustang volleyball players travel to Yerington. On Saturday, they host Silver Stage at 11 a.m and noon. Come prepared for a silent auction.
Its purpose is to raise funds for a Lovelock family in the midst of medical treatment.
