W.G. Ramirez Associated Press HENDERSON — When Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis chose his new coach in January, he made it clear Josh McDaniels’ success as an offensive coordinator in New England weighed heavily on his decision. “I’ve just always seen the Patriots as a team that not only adapts from week to week or half to half but maybe even series to series,” Davis said at McDaniels’ introductory news conference on Jan. 31. “I just believe in Josh’s ability to assess a situation and make the changes in real-time, and that’s always been something that’s impressed me.”
Major League Baseball has taken its fair share of criticism for changes trying to get younger fans interested in the game, but there has been one this season that has generated rave reviews. MLB has expanded letting players being mic’d up and interviewed during games after doing it on a limited basis from 2017-20. It has become a weekly occurrence on ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” and has produced some fun moments. “I’ve been pleasantly surprised that it has gathered and maintained momentum, because it’s not the first time we’ve asked for and had collaboration,” ESPN vice president of production Phil Orlins said. “So to see it get rolling this year, along with a tangible enthusiasm from players to be a part of it has been a pleasant breakthrough.”
How do you know when it’s summer in Lovelock? The scorching temperatures are a clue. School is out and the pool is open. And at McDougal Park, softball is king. It’s been that way for going on five years. The Lovelock Softball Association installed a scoreboard a few years ago but an electrical glitch prevented it from working. This year, Bruce and Jeremy Hudson tried a solar powered battery. It worked.

Shane Waldron spent his first offseason as the offensive coordinator in Seattle trying to install a new system mostly through virtual meetings and with very little on-field work. Being back in the classroom and on the field with his players is a far better situation going into Year 2 for Waldron, especially in the midst of a quarterback competition.
Judging by the turnout, Lovelock wholeheartedly supports adult softball. Teams compete at McDougal Park every Monday and Thursday from 6 p.m.-8 p.m.
People tend to procrastinate. That may be the case with the Mustang fun run. When Mike Brooks last checked about ten people had registered. “They can register up to the day of the race but it’s easier if it’s earlier,” he said. “Registering early helps us plan and get all the necessary items.” The 5K takes place on Friday, June 10, at 7 p.m. It takes off from courthouse park and follows a course back to the starting point. People also have the option of participating online and completing the race at their leisure.
Matt Fuller began by thanking Dave McLean, Lance Condie, Mike Brooks and Davis Murphy for coming out every week to help the PCHS track team improve. Windy, cold and rainy weather plagued the athletes until the end of the season. But it did not deter the coaches or team. Kylee Fuller and Brayden Wagner lost the chance to compete at the state level during their sophomore year due to Covid. There was no state championship during their junior year.
It’s hard to measure a team’s improvement just based off wins and losses. So, on awards night, Jared Jensen gave some examples of the Mustang baseball team’s growth.
“Softball is 90 percent mental and 10 percent physical. It’s a game that’s set up for you to fail,” Jordan McKinney said as she stood behind the podium on awards night. “By the end of the season these girls had it figured out.” She gestured toward the 2022 Pershing County High School softball team. They stood on the auditorium stage in front of their trophies.
Klay Thompson drained the 3-pointers. Draymond Green anchored the defense and even chipped in on the offensive end for a change. Stephen Curry capped off an MVP performance.
