The first month of the season for the Battle Mountain High School softball team has been an odd one to say the least. The Lady Longhorns opened the season in the first week of March at the Pershing County tournament in Lovelock. Battle Mountain got one day of play in, before bad weather wiped out the final day of play. After a week off in the schedule, Battle Mountain was set to take on Silver Stage in a three-game series on its home field to begin Northern 2A action. The Nighthawks decided to forfeit and not make the trip. The Lady Longhorns was supposed to be back in Battle Mountain this past weekend to play Incline for three games. The Highlanders informed the Lady Longhorns that they would not make the trip out to the east side of the state.
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski refused to let his players ponder the possibility of facing North Carolina for the first time in the NCAA Tournament after the Blue Devils had punched their Final Four ticket with a win over Arkansas. They have no choice but to think about it now.
Winning by now should be old hat for Scottie Scheffler. Sunday in the Dell Technologies Match Play was special for so many reasons, and the new No. 1 player in the world couldn’t hide it. Moments after Scheffler closed out Kevin Kisner on the 15th hole to win for the third time in five starts, the 25-year-old Texan was overcome by tears and hugs, from his wife to his parents and sisters and pretty much everyone who could get a piece of him at Austin Country Club. From a top junior in Dallas to four years as a Texas Longhorn to his time outside the ropes at the Match Play watching the world’s best, all Scheffler wanted to do was play alongside them.
Standing at the top of the ladder, Lexie Hull got the final snip with the scissors, drawing one of the loudest cheers of the night as she draped the net around her neck. Hull did all she could to get defending national champion Stanford back to her hometown for the Spokane Regional. Then, she became the catalyst for getting the Cardinal back to the women’s Final Four.
The Battle Mountain High School boys golf team traveled to Elko this past Thursday for the second tournament of the season. The Longhorns improved by 56 strokes from the first week to shoot 401 and finish third at Ruby View Golf Course,
After attending College of Southern Idaho's winter softball clinic in December, the Battle Mountain High School softball team was invited to go to one of their home games. This opportunity came this weekend. Eight girls, two coaches and their families met at the First Federal Field on the CSI campus to watch some higher level softball play and enjoyed the beautiful weather. A huge thank you goes out to Coach Nick Baumert, his coaches and the CSI Golden Eagles. Battle Mountain is scheduled to host Incline this weekend.
The Battle Mountain High School track and field team made its way to western Nevada this past Thursday for the Laker Invitational at Pyramid Lake High School.
Battle Mountain’s Nevaeh Serna qualifies for the Far Western Swimming Championships after competing in the 2022 Pacific Swimming SC Junior Olympics this past weekend in Santa Clara, Calif.
The Battle Mountain High School boys golf team traveled to West Wendover on Thursday, March 17, to open its 2022 campaign. Although the Longhorns did not place as a team, they are looking to do so in Elko this week.
The Battle Mountain High School baseball team rallied from a slow start to its doubleheader on Saturday with Silver Stage to beat the Nighthawks 13-3 and 7-6 on Saturday in Battle Mountain. In the opener on Saturday, Silver Stage jumped on the scoreboard with a run in the opening frame and had opportunities to add to the lead in the first inning, but the Longhorns escaped giving up just the one run.
The Battle Mountain High School track and field team was in Elko County this past Saturday for the Spring Creek League Meet that featured 1A, 2A and 3A schools.
The Battle Mountain High School baseball team picked up one win in a three-game series against Malad, Idaho, this past weekend. The Dragons won the opener on Friday 5-2 and claimed the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday 13-1. The Longhorns avoided the series sweep with a 5-4 win in the finale and are now 2-3 on the season.
The Battle Mountain High School girls basketball team was well rewarded for its trip to the state tournament with postseason awards. The Lady Longhorns’ Zarina Ceja, Christina Holley and Brynnlee Freeman were named to the Northern 2A all-league, first team. In addition, Holley and Freeman were chose for the 2A all-state, first team. Ceja was named to the all-state, second team. Kaybrie Nield was named to the Northern 2A all-league, second team.
Matt Bradley had 24 points to help San Diego State fend off Nevada 79-78 on Saturday night. Bradley made 11 of 12 foul shots and added six rebounds for the Aztecs (21-7, 13-4 Mountain West Conference).
The chief executives of Bally’s Corp. and Gaming and Leisure Properties didn’t reject the idea of the Oakland A’s building a Major League Baseball stadium on the same site as the Tropicana Las Vegas during quarterly conference calls last week. But they never mentioned the team nor the facility while saying the 34-acre location at the corner of the Strip and Tropicana Boulevard could be improved with additional amenities, such as a baseball stadium, beyond the aging 1,500-room Rat Pack-era casino-hotel.
