Battle Mountain senior Nolan Chopp swept the shot put and discus at the Eureka Invitational on Friday, April 15. Chopp set season-bests in each event, throwing the shot put 42 feet, 4 inches and the discus 120-0. Aydan Samuelson was the runner-up in the discus with a toss of 110-0 and the senior was fourth in the shot put at 37-0. Sean Bengoa set a personal best in the 100-meter dash to finish with a time of 11.84 and he ran a personal best as well in the 200 meters to place fourth in a time of 24.50.
Mother Nature left the Battle Mountain and North Tahoe high school baseball teams in a struggle to find a place to play their three-game Northern 2A series. The games were scheduled to take place in Tahoe City, Calif., but recent snow storms did not allow that to happen. The series still took place but in two different locations. The opening game on Friday was played at Golden Eagle Regional Park in Sparks, with North Tahoe winning 11-1. The two squads moved to Pershing County High School in Lovelock on Saturday and the Lakers swept a doubleheader 13-3 and 16-1. The Longhorns dropped to 9-0 overall and 5-6 in the Northern 2A.
Kyle Busch backed into the record book by stealing a win at dirt-covered Bristol Motor Speedway. That’s what he’d say if it had been anyone else, right? Busch won his first race of the season Sunday night by sliding past the leaders as Tyler Reddick and Chase Briscoe spun racing for the win. Busch tied Hall of Famer Richard Petty’s NASCAR record for victories in consecutive years at 18.
Apparently, no one in the Northern 2A want to play the Battle Mountain High School softball team. For the third time this year, the Lady Longhorns had a league three-game series wiped off the board. Silver Stage and Incline forfeited games earlier this season and North Tahoe did the same this past weekend.
Battle Mountain’s Nevaeh Serna swam for the Battle Mountain NNA Swim team at the 2022 Pacific Swimming Far Western Championships this past weekend in Morgan Hill, Calif. She was the only NNA swimmer to qualify for the Far Western Championships.
Nevada football is set for the first ever Battle Born Showdown, sponsored by River City Logistics, on April 23 at 6 p.m. inside Mackay Stadium.
The Battle Mountain High School track and field team traveled Reno this past Friday for the North Valleys Relays. Nolan Chopp set a season best in the discus to place fifth with a toss of 117 feet, 10 inches. The senior placed eighth in the shot put with a season-best throw of 40-8.
Three members of the Lowry High School track and field team made their way to California and the Sierra Nevada Mountains this past Friday to take part in the Colfax Invitational in Colfax, Calif.
After winning its first six Northern 2A games by forfeit, the Battle Mountain High School softball team got to see its first league action on the field with a road trip to Yerington this past weekend. The Lions, who are undefeated on the season, stayed that way, sweeping the Lady Longhorns in three games. Yerington won the series opener on Friday 7-3 and swept a doubleheader on Saturday 7-1 and 5-3. Battle Mountain dropped to 10-5 overall and 6-3 in the Northern 2A.
After opening with five straight wins in the Northern 2A, the Battle Mountain High School baseball team suffered its first losses in league play this past weekend in Yerington. The Lions won all three games of the tripleheader to drop the Longhorns to 9-6 overall and 5-3 in the Northern 2A. Yerington won the first game on Friday 8-0 and swept Saturday’s games 5-2 and 13-4.
The Battle Mountain Little League held its opening ceremonies this past Saturday morning. The league grew by more than 80 players from a year ago and there are nearly 320 players. Aaron Dorman threw the first pitch out to his grandson Matthew and January Baker sang the National Anthem.
The Battle Mountain NNA Swim Team was back in the pool March 26-27 in Reno for Northern Nevada Aquatics Age Group Open. The group had a number of great performances and continue to improve their times. Nevaeh Serna earned high-point on the weekend and qualified for two more events for the Far Westerns.
Nevada football alumni and NFL stars, Joel Bitonio and Austin Corbett in collaboration with presenting sponsor, Home Means Nevada, Co., will be hosting a free football camp for kids between 3rd-8th grade from 2-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23 at Mackay Stadium. Attendees will run through drills, play mini games, and learn fundamental football techniques.
The Battle Mountain High School boys golf team enjoyed the home cooking of its home course to place second on Wednesday, March 30. Seven other teams from around Nevada visited Mountain View Golf Course, where the weather was ideal.
The Battle Mountain High School baseball team was busy last week with five games and the Longhorns came out on top in all five contests. The Longhorns stepped out of league play on Tuesday, March 29, and swept Carlin in a doubleheader in Carlin. Battle Mountain won game one 22-4 and the nightcap 16-0, which included a perfect game from Marcos Jimenez. In the opener against Carlin, Battle Mountain led 15- after the top of the third inning after scoring nine runs in the second inning and five more in the third.
