Gilliland, Backus, Kuskie win individual state championships

The Lowry High School track and field team concluded its season with a number of strong finishes at the NIAA State Track and Field Championships this past weekend at Reed High School in Sparks. Lowry junior Shaun Gilliland brought home the lone state title for the Buckaroo boys winning the pole vault with a mark of 12 feet.  He tied with Spring Creek’s Tarron Metz at 12-0, but won the state title on fewer misses. 

Lowry track and field team brings home regional championships

It was a good weekend for the Lowry High School Track and Field Team at the Northern 3A Regional Championships this past weekend at Reed High School in Sparks.  Jovi Kuskie brought home three individual titles in the 800 meters, 1,600 meters and 3,200 meters. The senior needed every bit of her personal best in the 800 meters to edge out Spring Creek’s Kiely Munson (2:24.16-2:24.79) in a near photo finish.  Kuskie beat out Munson to win the 1,600 meters, as Kuskie finished at 5:35.54 and Munson at 5:40.17. Kuskie made it 3-for-3 over Munson, winning the3,200 meters in a time of 12:47.34. 

State championships this weekend

The 2021-22 high school sports season comes to an end this weekend with the spring sports state championships.

Lizaanetz earns sixth, seventh-place finishes at Northern 3A regional swimming

Lowry High School senior Matthew Lizanetz reached the finals in two events this past weekend at the Northern 3A Regional Swimming Championships in Carson City. 

Crutcher wins 1A shot put at Northern 1A Regional Championships

McDermitt High School junior Cayla Crutcher took home the top spot in the shot put at the 1A Northern Regional Track and Field Championships this past weekend at Reed High School.

Lowry softball knocked out of regional tournament, fall short of state bid

The Lowry High School softball team was looking to get back to the state tournament but saw its run at a trip to Fernley come up short with a 14-4 loss to Churchill County this past Friday night in Winnemucca.  The Lady Bucks ended the season at 19-17.

Lowry sweeps Dayton to end regular season, earns No. 4 seed in tournament

After struggling with seven consecutive losses in Northern 3A East play, the Lowry High School regrouped this past Thursday and Friday to sweep Dayton in a tripleheader and head into the Northern 3A Regional Championships, which is Thursday through Saturday in Winnemucca. Lowry beat Dayton 15-0 on Thursday and swept a doubleheader from the Dust Devils on Friday, winning 18-0 and 16-2.  The Lady Bucks finished the regular season at 15-15 and 7-8 in the Northern 3A East.

NIAA awards $20,000 in scholarships to Nevada high school student-athletes

The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) and One Nevada Credit Union are pleased to announce $20,000 in scholarship funds will be awarded for the NIAA / One Nevada Top Ten Student Athletes of the Year program.  The student-athletes of the year awards are presented to the top students who excel in sports, maintain a high academic status, and volunteer in their community. 

Lowry High School 2022-23 athletic summer schedule

MANDATORY SPORTS PHYSICALS: Be looking for HGH/LHS social media post for this year’s free sports physicals in the summer of 2022 from 9 a.m. to noon. All incoming 9th and 11th grade student-athletes for the 2022-23 school year or student-athletes unable to complete their regular season due to an injury must receive a physical.  Forms will be available at HGH or on the NIAA website.

Esquivel, Peters qualify for 3A State Golf Championships in Pahrump

The regular season for the Lowry High School boys golf team and the rest of the Northern 3A came to a close last week at Genoa Lakes Golf Course with the South Tahoe High School tournament.

Regional tournaments get going this week

The final high school regional tournaments of the school year get under way throughout Northern Nevada this week. Lowry High School will host the Northern 3A baseball and softball regional championship, beginning Thursday and running through Saturday. In softball on Thursday, Lowry takes on Elko at 10 a.m., with the winner to face Fernley at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.  Churchill County takes on Spring Creek at 12:15 p.m. and the winner plays North Valleys at 4:15 p.m.

Lowry High School to hold boys/girls youth basketball camp

Presented by Lowry High School and under the direction of head varsity boys and  girls basketball coaches Nate Green and Chelsea Cabatbat,  there will be a youth basketball camp for boys and girls for incoming third through eighth graders from June 14-17 in the main gym at Lowry. Cost for the camp is $80 and included a camp T-Shirt.

Ladies Golf Club results —

Carole Doughty shot a low-net score of 39 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club Accuracy tournament held Tuesday, May 2, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
