After completing a make-up game on Thursday night in Carlin, the McDermitt High School boys basketball team returned home this past weekend for the final time. On Thursday night, the Bulldogs used a big rally in the fourth quarter to beat the Railroaders 40-37 and snap a five-game losing streak.
The McDermitt High School girls basketball team continues to show its dominance with three more wins last week — running its win streak to 11 and a 14-2 record overall.
The Lowry High School boys basketball team made its final road trip of the season to Fallon and Reno. The Buckaroos took on Churchill County on Friday night and lost 61-46 to the Greenwave. Lowry moved over to Reno on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference game with North Valleys. The Panthers pulled away late for a 59-52 win. Lowry dropped to 9-14 overall and 0-8 in the Northern 3A East.
After beginning the Northern 3A East with three home games, the Lowry High School girls basketball team has been on the road for the last five contests. The road trip that started on Jan. 17, concluded this past Friday in Fallon with a 52-34 win over Churchill County.
The regular season to the high school wrestling season has come to a quick and end and Lowry High School was in Fernley last weekend at the Vaquero Classic for one final tournament. Jhett Harber won the 175-pound weight class, while Kruz Gomez at 113 pounds and Luke Fentress (190) were second.
The Lowry High School boys basketball team continues to give teams fits in the Northern 3A East, but are still looking to get that first win in league play. Lowry was back on the road this past Thursday in Spring Creek and gave the Spartans everything they could handle. Spring Creek used a late run to win 70-63.
You can’t blame the Lowry High School girls basketball team if they were a little ticked off, as they continued its five-game road trip in Elko County. The back-to-back state championships, have lost just three league games in the last 2.5 years and are 69-12 overall in that time.
The McDermitt High School boys basketball team battled to the end in its two road games, but came away with two close losses to drop to 2-15 overall and 1-5 in the 1A East. McDermitt was in Jackpot on Friday and lost 47-46 and dropped a six-point contest to Wells on Saturday — 38-32.
Humboldt County is producing some pretty good girls basketball right now and the McDermitt High School basketball team is showing the 1A it is one of the best teams in the state. The Lady Bulldogs ran their winning streak to eight games and improved to 6-0 in the 1A East, after a pair of road wins last weekend.
Winnemucca’s Alexa Azurmendi finished in first place in the ‘C’ Division at the Northern Nevada Masters youth tournament held on The tournament was held at Homegrown Bowling Center and was sponsored by the Carson Country U.S. Bowling Congress association. Forty-five bowlers participated in the tournament from throughout western Nevada.
The Lowry High School boys basketball team completed the first half of the Northern 3A East schedule with two road losses to Dayton and Fernley last week. Lowry was in Dayton on Wednesday, Jan. 17, and overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half, but the rally came up just short.
After being snowed out the week before, the Lowry High School wrestling team was able to honor its seniors on Wednesday, Jan. 17, in duals against Fernley and Battle Mountain.
Fernley was the place to be this past Friday, as girls basketball took center stage with a 2023 state championship rematch between the Lowry High School girls basketball team and Fernley. It was standing room only in the final game of the Vaqueros gym and was the game of the week on Nevada Sports Net.
After an unexpected week off due to the weather, the McDermitt High School boys basketball team was back on the floor this past weekend for two home games. McDermitt hosted league-leading Eureka on Friday and lost 63-28. The Bulldogs took on Lund on Saturday afternoon and lost 58-43.
There is a new leader atop the 1A East standings, as the McDermitt High School girls basketball team knocked off Eureka 50-45 on Friday in McDermitt, in what could be the first of three meetings.
