Lady Bulldogs run win streak to eight

Humboldt County is producing some pretty good girls basketball right now and the McDermitt High School basketball team is showing the 1A it is one of the best teams in the state. The Lady Bulldogs ran their winning streak to eight games and improved to 6-0 in the 1A East, after a pair of road wins last weekend.

Winnemucca youngster wins at Northern Nevada Masters youth tournament

Winnemucca’s Alexa Azurmendi finished in first place in the ‘C’ Division at the Northern Nevada Masters youth tournament held on The tournament was held at Homegrown Bowling Center and was sponsored by the Carson Country U.S. Bowling Congress association. Forty-five bowlers participated in the tournament from throughout western Nevada.

Lowry boys drop games to Dayton, Fernley on the road

The Lowry High School boys basketball team completed the first half of the Northern 3A East schedule with two road losses to Dayton and Fernley last week. Lowry was in Dayton on Wednesday, Jan. 17, and overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half, but the rally came up just short.

Lowry wrestlers pick up six dual victories

After being snowed out the week before, the Lowry High School wrestling team was able to honor its seniors on Wednesday, Jan. 17, in duals against Fernley and Battle Mountain.

Lowry cruises past Dayton, drops state title rematch to Fernley

Fernley was the place to be this past Friday, as girls basketball took center stage with a 2023 state championship rematch between the Lowry High School girls basketball team and Fernley. It was standing room only in the final game of the Vaqueros gym and was the game of the week on Nevada Sports Net.

McDermitt boys drop two home games

After an unexpected week off due to the weather, the McDermitt High School boys basketball team was back on the floor this past weekend for two home games. McDermitt hosted league-leading Eureka on Friday and lost 63-28. The Bulldogs took on Lund on Saturday afternoon and lost 58-43.

There is a new leader atop the 1A East standings, as the McDermitt High School girls basketball team knocked off Eureka 50-45 on Friday in McDermitt, in what could be the first of three meetings.

The Lowry High School and Pershing County High School wrestling teams had their trip to Spring Creek and the Kiwanis Invitational this past weekend canceled due to the storm that hit northern Nevada.

The McDermitt High School girls and boys basketball team had its games postponed this past weekend due to the winter storm that came the area. The Bulldogs were set to travel to Owyhee and Carlin. The games will be made up at a later date.

Churchill County holds on to knock off Lowry boys in Winnemucca

After suffering a 62-50 loss to Churchill County on Friday night in Winnemucca, the Lowry High School boys basketball team finds itself in an uphill climb toward a postseason berth. The Buckaroos dropped to 9-8 overall and 0-3 in the Northern 3A. The regional playoffs changed for this season with the top four teams from the East and West qualifying.

Lady Bucks cruise past Greenwave to remain undefeated in Northern 3A

With her leg wrapped and knee still black and blue, Britain Backus returned to the Lowry High School basketball team lineup after missing the Elko game and did not miss a beat. The junior came out on fire against Churchill County on Friday night in Winnemucca and the Greenwave could not put the flames out.

McDermitt boys split home, league openers

After spending the first month and 11 games of the season on the road, the McDermitt High School boys basketball team finally saw its home floor this past weekend, opening league play against Jackpot and Wells. The Bulldogs held off a Jaguar fourth-quarter rally and a last-second 3-point shot to win 47-45. McDermitt fell to 1-1 in the Eastern 1A and 2-11 overall with a 40-36 loss to Wells on Saturday afternoon.

Lady Bulldogs cruise in league openers

Fresh off four wins and a tournament championship at the Christmas Classic in Reno, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team remained red hot, with two easy home wins over Jackpot and Wells to start Eastern 1A play. In its first home game of the season, McDermitt overcame a slow start against Jackpot but held the Jaguars to just five points in the final three quarters to win 61-11.

Lowry wrestlers travel to Idaho, Sparks

The Lowry High School wrestling team split up its team this past weekend, sending a group to Idaho for the Rollie Lane Invitational and another to Sparks for the Sparks Invitational. The Rollie Lane Invitational is one of the best tournaments in the west featuring 90 teams for a number of different states.

LHS boys fall to Spring Creek, Elko

After playing its first 14 games on the road that ranged from Elko to Susanville, Calif, to South Lake Tahoe and Mesquite, the Lowry High School boys basketball team finally saw its home floor for game action this past weekend.
