Lowry sweeps doubleheader from Sparks

When Mother Nature unleashed her fury in northern Nevada and you are a spring sport, you need to improvise at times. The Lowry High School baseball team was scheduled to travel to north Reno this past Friday to play North Valleys in a crossover game.

Local cowboys, cowgirls shine at Las Vegas High School Rodeo

The Nevada High School Rodeo Association made its final stop in southern Nevada, with a trip to Las Vegas on Feb. 24-25. Humboldt County’s Emma Garijo was tops in the breakaway roping average by two seconds at 5.88. She won the first performance with a time of 2.89 and was second in the final performance at 2.99.

LHS swimmers sweep dual from Wooster

While most spring sports teams in northern Nevada were finding cover due to a winter storm, the Lowry High School swim team was inside at Alf Sorenson Pool in Reno top open its season on Friday, March 1. Lowry picked up duals wins over Wooster, as the boys cruised to a 75-23 win and the girls team recorded a 96-90 victory.

The Elite of Nevada Basketball- Stoker named 3A Player of the Year, Backus earns all-state, first team honors

Lowry High School senior Savannah Stoker was named the Northern 3A East, Northern 3A and 3A State Player for the second straight season. In addition, the Lowry girls basketball team won its third consecutive state title and ninth overall, which is fourth most in Nevada history.

Lowry softball cruises past Sparks in crossover play

Sophomore Elisabeth George was one out away from a no-hitter in her outing at Sparks this past Friday afternoon, when the Railroaders got their first hit. She still helped the Lowry High School softball team to a 19-0 win in crossover play.

Buckaroo baseball team opens season at Colorado River Invitational in Needles

While Northern Nevada was getting slammed by one of the biggest storms of the year, the Lowry High School baseball team was able to escape beforehand and head to Needles, Calif., to open the season. Under the direction of new head coach, Brent Riemersma, the Buckaroos went 1-4 over three days at the Colorado River Invitational.

The 2023 season ended with the Lowry High School softball team in the 3A state championship in Mesquite. The 2024 squad began its quest to get back to the title game with another trip down south, but his time a little more west and into California.

Lady Bulldogs finish second at 1A State Championships

RENO — After a tough exit in the first round of the 2023 state championships, the McDermitt High School girls basketball team came back with vengeance on its way to the 1A state title game this season. The Lady Bulldogs came in as a young team this year, with just one senior on the roster in Nicolette Northrup.

Spring season for Nevada High School Rodeo Association starts in Pahrump

The second half of the Nevada High School Rodeo Association got back rolling on Feb. 16-17 in Pahrump. Humboldt County’s Billy DeLong came back home with a pair of average victories in boys cutting and saddle bronc. DeLong scored 143 points, placing second in the first performance with 70 points and winning the final performance with 73 point

Lowry girls basketball team rallies to beat Pahrump Valley, Fernley for third straight title

RENO — They were not supposed to win last year but at the right time the Lowry High School girls basketball team came through to win a second straight state championship. With a relatively large turnover in the roster to begin the 2023-24 season, many thought the same fate for the latest edition of the Lady Bucks.

Misfits wins 2024 Don Peters Memorial Tournament

Misfits won the 2024 Don Peters Memorial Tournament at Spare Time Bowl. The Winners Inn and Winnemucca Inn helped sponsoring the tournament, as 36 teams and nearly 110 bowlers participated, with 100 of them from out of town.

McDermitt boys see season end in opening round loss to Owyhee

Just a few days after playing them in the final weekend of the regular season, the McDermitt High School boys basketball team returned to Owyhee on Tuesday, Feb. 13, for the opening round of the 1A East Regional Tournament.

Harber becomes two-time state champion with 175-pound title at 3A state championships

Lowry High School’s Jhett Harber captured the 175-pound title at the NIAA 3A State Wrestling Championships this past Friday in Bullhead City. For Harber, it is second state title after winning the 157-pound crown in 2023 in Winnemucca. The junior will have a chance at a third title next year Harber pinned his way to the title bout with wins over Caelb Porter of Boulder City and Andres Flores of Elko.

Lady Bulldogs hold on to beat Vandals for 1A East Regional title

While the 3A has a pretty good rivalry going, the 1A East has one that is not bad at all. The McDermitt High School girls basketball team and Eureka have been by far the two best teams in the league over the past couple years. The Vandals got the best of the Lady Bulldogs a season ago winning the regional title.

Lowry girls knock off Fernley to claim Northern 3A championship

One of the best rivalries in the state over the last two years has belonged in northern Nevada. The Lowry High School girls basketball team and Fernley have played seven times in the last two season — providing a battle to the end in just about all of them.
