It’s a game that’s set up for you to fail,” Jordan McKinney said as she stood behind the podium on awards night. “By the end of the season these girls had it figured out.” She gestured toward the 2022 Pershing County High School softball team. They stood on the auditorium stage in front of their trophies.
Klay Thompson drained the 3-pointers. Draymond Green anchored the defense and even chipped in on the offensive end for a change. Stephen Curry capped off an MVP performance.
Surfing is no longer a solitary pursuit for Dan Fischer. When he catches a wave along the shores of Rhode Island, he looks down at a surfboard covered with the names of people who have died, but who shared his love of the ocean. His father’s name is the guiding light at the top.
The Nevada High School Rodeo Association held its High School and Junior High School Finals Rodeo at the Winnemucca Event Center from Thursday to Monday. Competitors that finished first through fourth in their respective events in the final average points from the year qualify for the National High School Finals Rodeo in July. Those that are fifth-25th in each event qualify for the Silver State International Rodeo in Winnemucca from June 30-July 7.
The Nevada High School Rodeo Association closed out its regular season at Wells on May 14-15. Humboldt County’s Billy DeLong claimed the top spot in the boys cutting average with 142.5 points. DeLong had performances of 71 and 71.5. DeLong earned a runner-up finish in saddle brock with an eight-second ride of 68 points in the first performance.
Lowry High School’s Landon Esquivel and Cal Peters recorded top-10 finishes at the NIAA 3A State Golf Championships last week at Mountain Falls Golf Course in Pahrump.
The high school baseball and softball season came to a close this past weekend with state tournaments throughout the state. Baseball
FMA won the 2022 Bad Boys Tournament held May 14-15 at Spare Time Bowl. Nearly 110 bowlers participated, with 94 of them from out of town, as the Winnemucca Inn and Winner’s Casino helped sponsor the tournament. Over $12,000 in prize money was awarded as 36 teams competed.
The high school track and field season came to an end the past weekend at Reed High School in Sparks with the NIAA State Track and Field Championships. Lowry’s Shaun Gilliland (pole vault), Emily Backus (long jump), Jovi Kuskie (1,600 meters, 3,200 meters) and the girls 4x100 relay (Emily Backus, Ellanora Peterson, Sydnee Pettis, Elizabeth Aguilar) won state championships, as did McDermitt’s Cayla Crutcher in the girls 1A shot put. Battle Mountain’s Nolan Chopp won the 2A boys discus state title.
McDermitt High School junior Cayla Crutcher was one the top girls throwers in the 1A all season with a number of victories during the spring. That was no different this past weekend at the NIAA State Track and Field Championships at Reed High School in Sparks. It wasn’t easy though, as Crutcher held off Owyhee’s Mattisen Jones to win the state title in the shot put.
Justin Thomas wrapped his arms around the 27-pound Wanamaker Trophy after winning his second PGA Championship, and thousands of fans ringing the 18th green amid the setting sun at Southern Hills showered him in adulation. Good thing they woke up in time for his Sunday charge. For nearly four full days, the year’s second major had been a major snooze, the cast atop the leaderboard a list mostly made up of also-rans searching for a moment stardom.

Not only did Brayden Wagner set a new personal record in the discus throw (117-01 feet). He brought home a fourth-place medal. And he just found out he’d be able to compete at state a few days before the tournament.
The Lowry High School track and field team concluded its season with a number of strong finishes at the NIAA State Track and Field Championships this past weekend at Reed High School in Sparks. Lowry junior Shaun Gilliland brought home the lone state title for the Buckaroo boys winning the pole vault with a mark of 12 feet. He tied with Spring Creek’s Tarron Metz at 12-0, but won the state title on fewer misses.
The Pershing County High School softball team made it to the state softball championship at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas last weekend. They played as the No. 2 team in the Northern 2A League.
