The Battle Mountain NNA Swim team began its long course season at the 2022 Intermountain Classic from May 27-29 at the Carson Aquatic Facility in Carson City. Coach Michelle Hall was very happy with her team’s performance. Weston Reiva is a new swimmer and Zayne Hall is back from knee surgery. Nevaeh Serna had five first-place finishes on the weekend.
Humboldt County’s Matti DeLong earned the all-around cowgirl honors this season in the junior high division of the Nevada High School Rodeo Association. In addition, DeLong won the season-long barrel racing standing and is headed to the National Junior High School Finals Rodeo in Perry Georgia from June 19-25.
The Humboldt County Rodeo Club took home a couple state championships, as the club hosted the Nevada State Finals Rodeo in Winnemucca from May 26-30 at the Winnemucca Event Center. Emma Garijo came in to the state finals leading the season-long pole bending points standings and came away from the weekend as the state champion in the event.
Quin Snyder guided the Utah Jazz to six consecutive playoff appearances, was an NBA coach of the year finalist just last season and won nearly 60% of his games with the franchise. And he’s decided that was enough. Snyder resigned Sunday as coach of the Jazz, ending an eight-year run of regular-season success but with the team never getting past the second round of the playoffs in his tenure.
Seven-time Pro Bowl center Alex Mack is retiring after 13 years in the NFL, leaving a major hole in the middle of the offensive line for the San Francisco 49ers.
Shane Waldron spent his first offseason as the offensive coordinator in Seattle trying to install a new system mostly through virtual meetings and with very little on-field work. Being back in the classroom and on the field with his players is a far better situation going into Year 2 for Waldron, especially in the midst of a quarterback competition.
Judging by the turnout, Lovelock wholeheartedly supports adult softball. Teams compete at McDougal Park every Monday and Thursday from 6 p.m.-8 p.m.
People tend to procrastinate. That may be the case with the Mustang fun run. When Mike Brooks last checked about ten people had registered. “They can register up to the day of the race but it’s easier if it’s earlier,” he said. “Registering early helps us plan and get all the necessary items.” The 5K takes place on Friday, June 10, at 7 p.m. It takes off from courthouse park and follows a course back to the starting point. People also have the option of participating online and completing the race at their leisure.
The high school track and field season came to a close for area teams with the NIAA State Championships at Reed High School in Sparks on May 20-21. A handful of state champions came from Lowry, Battle Mountain and McDermitt.
Matt Fuller began by thanking Dave McLean, Lance Condie, Mike Brooks and Davis Murphy for coming out every week to help the PCHS track team improve. Windy, cold and rainy weather plagued the athletes until the end of the season. But it did not deter the coaches or team. Kylee Fuller and Brayden Wagner lost the chance to compete at the state level during their sophomore year due to Covid. There was no state championship during their junior year.
It’s hard to measure a team’s improvement just based off wins and losses. So, on awards night, Jared Jensen gave some examples of the Mustang baseball team’s growth.
Presented by Lowry High School and under the direction of head varsity boys and girls basketball coaches Nate Green and Chelsea Cabatbat, there will be a youth basketball camp for boys and girls for incoming third through eighth graders from June 14-17 in the main gym at Lowry. Cost for the camp is $80 and included a camp T-Shirt.
