Lowry High School’s Kaiden Boyles was named to the Northern 3A and Northern 3A first-team for his play a pitcher and utility this year for the Buckaroo baseball team.
Nearly 125 youngsters from the third through eighth grade attended the Lowry High School youth boys and girls basketball camp last week. The camp was taught by Lowry coaches and players and focused on drills and enthusiasm to help the players increase their basketball fundamentals and overall knowledge of the game. In addition, the goal is learn and enjoy the game within the Lowry tradition.
Los Angeles Chargers controlling owner Dean Spanos has been accused of repeated breaches of fiduciary duty and misogynistic behavior in a lawsuit filed by his sister. The filing escalates the ongoing battle among the four Spanos siblings over control of the franchise. Dea Spanos Berberian filed a petition Thursday in San Joaquin County Superior Court seeking sole control of the family trust that has a 36% stake in the ownership of the Chargers.

The Battle Mountain Little League and Junior League softball teams will be in Spring Creek this weekend for the Nevada District 3 Tournament. The Little League squad will play on Saturday against the winner of Ruby Mountain White Pine, who play on Friday 9 p.m. Elko and Walker River play at 7 p.m. on Friday.
As the Nevada State High School Rodeo Finals concluded over Memorial Day weekend in Winnemucca, Battle Mountain’s Desi Coombs took home the breakaway state title and is headed to Gillette, Wyo., for the National Finals from July 17-23. Coombs came into the state finals in fourth place but a strong performance in Winnemucca moved her to the top spot. She won the opening go-around with a time of 2.92 seconds and followed with runs of 4.010 and 3.17 to claim the state crown. She just missed out on a trip to the national finals with a fifth-place finish in barrel racing. Coombs knocked down barrels in the opening and short go-arounds.
Battle Mountain’s Marena Fuller and Shea Jones were recently named to the Northern 2A all-league first team for their play this season. Fuller, the Lady Longhorns’ catcher and a senior, hit .458 this season with one home run, 22 hirs, 21 runs scored and 16 RBI. Jones hit .333 for Battle Mountain with 20 runs scored and 13 hits and the junior was 5-5 in the circle his spring with 70 strikeouts and 26 walks. Yerington’s Hayley Richardson, Piper Davis and Brianna Sanchez were chosen and the Coach of the Year, Player of the Year and Catcher of the Year, respectively, in the Northern 2A.
A trio of Battle Mountain High School baseball players were named to the Northern 2A all-league first team, as well as the 2A all-state first and second teams. Senior Anthony Del Rio was named to the Northern 2A all-league first team and all-state first team. Del Rio hit .514 this season with four home runs, 15 doubles, 31 runs scored, 37 hits and 21 RBI. He was also one of the top pitchers in the state as well.
Eight players on the Lowry High School softball team, with sophomore Savannah Stoker collecting first-team, all-state, first-team, Northern 3A and first-team Northern 3A honors. Stoker led the Lady Bucks with a .529 batting average with 12 home runs and 59 RBI. She also scored 48 runs to go with 12 doubles and five triples
Lowry High School senior Emily Backus is staying in Nevada to continue her college education and basketball career. However, it will be a few hundred miles south of Winnemucca at the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas. Backus recently signed a letter of intent with the Coyotes to join the basketball team next year. Backus is one of four Lowry players to sign with college programs. She was part of the Lady Buckaroos’ squad from this year to go 27-3 and win the 3A state championship for the first time since 2014. Lowry defeated Spring Creek 52-29 in Las Vegas to cap off the title run.

Ramirez Associated Press HENDERSON — When Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis chose his new coach in January, he made it clear Josh McDaniels’ success as an offensive coordinator in New England weighed heavily on his decision. “I’ve just always seen the Patriots as a team that not only adapts from week to week or half to half but maybe even series to series,” Davis said at McDaniels’ introductory news conference on Jan. 31. “I just believe in Josh’s ability to assess a situation and make the changes in real-time, and that’s always been something that’s impressed me.”
Major League Baseball has taken its fair share of criticism for changes trying to get younger fans interested in the game, but there has been one this season that has generated rave reviews. MLB has expanded letting players being mic’d up and interviewed during games after doing it on a limited basis from 2017-20. It has become a weekly occurrence on ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball” and has produced some fun moments. “I’ve been pleasantly surprised that it has gathered and maintained momentum, because it’s not the first time we’ve asked for and had collaboration,” ESPN vice president of production Phil Orlins said. “So to see it get rolling this year, along with a tangible enthusiasm from players to be a part of it has been a pleasant breakthrough.”
How do you know when it’s summer in Lovelock? The scorching temperatures are a clue. School is out and the pool is open. And at McDougal Park, softball is king. It’s been that way for going on five years. The Lovelock Softball Association installed a scoreboard a few years ago but an electrical glitch prevented it from working. This year, Bruce and Jeremy Hudson tried a solar powered battery. It worked.
