Over 50 girls turned out for the Lowry volleyball camp last week, under the direction of Lowry coaches and players. Campers learned the fundamentals of the game as well as having fun with some games.
Gail Piquet shot a low-gross score of 42 to win the first flight of the Winnemucca Ladies Golf Club Better Nine tournament golf Tuesday, June 21, at Winnemucca Municipal Golf Course.
Last year, the people of Lovelock came together to save the pool when it sprang a leak. This past Saturday, they and their children reaped a reward. Lovelock hosted Yerington for a medal meet, the first in two years. From morning until noon, the swimmers swam to the best of their abilities. Yerington’s Desert Fish wore purple.
If you drive by McDougal Park, you might hear the Wolf Pack howling about their undefeated status (6-0). Last Monday, they beat the Second Stringers by one point. On Thursday they knocked off Modelo Time.
The Little League all-star baseball tournaments continue, as the 10-12-year-old all-stars travel to Yerington for the District 3 tournament to be played at Buck Aiazzi Field.
Despite some unseasonable cool weather for June, the Good Times Drag Strip was a busy place on June 17 and 18 for the Jumpin’ June Drags. The two days of action saw racers compete in the Pro and Street/Sportsman divisions. Don Mertens took home first place and Jeff Lundy was second.
The Battle Mountain NNA Swim Team was at Idlewild Pool in Reno from June 17-19 for the Reno Aquatic Club Gamble. Nevaeh Serna picked up a runner-up finish in the 10 and under 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:27.48, an 8.25-second improvement. She was third in the 50-meter backstroke with a time of 41.01, which was nearly five second quicker. Serna took off nearly 12 seconds to place fourth at 2:47.87.
Humboldt County’s Huntley Byrd finished sixth in the final standings of pole bending at the National Junior High Finals Rodeo that concluded Saturday night in Perry, Georgia. There were 165 competitors in pole bending.
The Battle Mountain major and junior all-star softball teams made their way to Spring Creek this past weekend and Monday for the District 3 tournament. The junior all-stars beat Ruby Mountain and Elko to reach the championship game. Battle Mountain took on Elko in the title game on Monday and results were not available at press time. If Battle Mountain wins, it would advance to the state tournament in Las Vegas in July. The Battle Mountain major all-star squad lost games to White Pine and Ruby Mountain.
Last Saturday, Lovelock’s swimmers tumbled out of bed early.
So far, Wolf Pack leads with a 4-0 record. But there’s plenty of adult softball season left. It lasts through the end of July. Wolf Pack has competition from the defending champs, Thick N Wild. There’s also Modelo Time, Brew Crew, Weekend Warriors, Second Stringers, Smokin’ Aces and Goyo’s Garage.
