PCHS celebrates homecoming

The Homecoming Parade, a tradition of Pershing County High School for many years, was held Sept. 23. The parade is the last event before the homecoming football game, this year played against West Wendover's Wolverines, which was the subject of many of the floats.

Battle Mountain High School to celebrate Homecoming next week

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Battle Mountain High School will be celebrating Homecoming Week from Oct. 10 - 15. The theme this year is "Longhorn Celebration" and will be based on American holidays.

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Battle Mountain District Office (BMD), is preparing a comprehensive Resource Management Plan (RMP) and associated Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to guide management of BLM administered public land (surface lands and federal minerals) within the district.

They gathered at the Lander County Youth and Family Services building on Wednesday, Sept. 21 to announce and award the top three winners for their annual contest.

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County would continue to receive federal funding for its public schools, law enforcement programs and other essential services, under a bipartisan congressional agreement unveiled last week.

Austin students take part in Big Creek Run

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - In the early hours of Sept. 28, Austin junior and senior high school students participated in the Big Creek Run. This annual fundraiser provides funding to support students participating in Austin athletics and extracurricular activities.

Car strikes deputy's vehicle Man arrested for battery with

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - After a vehicle pursuit at around 7:55 p.m. on Sept. 29 that started on North Second Street, deputies arrested 29-year-old Jacob David Kiehne, of Battle Mountain, for several offenses, said Lander County Sheriff Ron Unger.

Dunphy Complex fires consume nearly 205,000 acres

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Dunphy Complex fires north of Carlin were made up of three distinct fires, including the Izzenhood, Chukar Canyon and Indian Creek fires. They erupted on Sept. 30 due to lightning and consumed nearly 205,000 acres.

Jacob's Well Pie-Eating Contest

Monday, Oct. 3, proved to be a fun-filled day at Jacob's Well, as eight contestants entered the Pie-Eating Contest. No entry fee was required, just an appetite! Participants James Carson, Arturo Serrano, Joe Youngblood, Brian Doney, Dana West, Braden McIntosh, Ian McRae and Bret Hetland battled for first place. Ian McRae took first place, eating 3¾ of chocolate pudding pies and winning a $25 gift certificate to Walmart. Hats off to volunteers Ruby Bryant, Donna Combs and Trish Hanson, who worked hard to keep the pies coming!

School board sets goals, objectives and performance objectives for district and superintendent Jim Squibb says he is enjoying his new job

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County School District's new Superintendent Jim Squibb has been busy settling into his job and says he is enjoying it. He started his new job as superintendent on July 1.

Breakfast for kids program going strong Lorrie Sparks gave brief presentation to the school board

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The local breakfast for kids program is still running strong and feeding numerous children throughout the school district, said Program Director Lorrie Sparks, who gave a brief presentation on the program to the Lander County School Board at their Sept. 28 board meeting.
