After three years, the federal government’s student loan repayment pause came to an end June 30. Come September, student loan servicers will begin to collect interest, and Nevadans with student loans will be expected to resume payments in October, per the U.S. Department of Education. As an expense borrowers have not had to consider in three years, economists are concerned repayment could boost defaults on all types of loans as well as depress discretionary spending, a potentially concerning trend for Nevada’s economy.

Feds announce $31.2 million in PILT funds headed to Nevada

The Department of the Interior today announced that 17 local governments in Nevada will receive a total of $31.2 million in Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) funding for 2023. Because local governments cannot tax federal lands, annual PILT payments help to defray the costs associated with maintaining important community services. Humboldt County will receive $2,184, 255, Lander County $1,190,500 and Pershing County $1,307, 830.

Little League all stars get underway in Elko and Fernley

The Little League District 3 all-star tournament gets underway this week in Elko with three divisions of action. The 8-10-year-old division starts on Friday with Silverada (Dayton) playing Walker River (Yerington) at 8 a.m. In the other portion of the bracket Winnemucca plays High Desert (Fernley) at 5:30 p.m.

Fatal car crash on Frontage Road 02 east of Battle Mountain

On Wednesday June 7, 2023, at approximately 4:54 A.M. Pacific Time, Troopers with the Nevada State Police, Highway Patrol Division, responded to a report of a vehicle crash on Frontage Road 02, near county mile marker 8 in Lander County.

Austin accreditation and school improvement

AUSTIN - The next several months will be a flurry of activity for Austin K-12 School. The staff will be participating in action research in an effort to meet the high school accreditation requirements, as well as aligning that plan with the K-12 school improvement plan as required by the federal No Child Left Behind mandate.

Lander County Fair provides end-of-summer fun

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Lander County Fair was held Sept. 10 - 11 at the Battle Mountain Civic Center and Elquist Park. In conjunction with the fair a carnival was brought in for the weekend and the Lander County Historical Society held their annual "Cookout at the Cookhouse" Museum on Saturday.

Seniors visit Safe Haven Rescue Zoo

IMLAY - David and Lynda Sugasa purchased 160 acres of land about six miles from Unionville. They accept animals from all over the U.S.A. that are in need of a good home. Some of these animals have been mistreated by their owners and are no longer wanted. On the 27th of August our Senior Center was able to visit their refuge. The day was cool with some high clouds. It was a perfect day for a small trip.
